There is a story on the independent about an inccident in South Africa where a while woman was attacked by two white males who mutilated her because she had a shop in which she also served blacks.

In the story it said that the word "kaffir" is used as a derogatory term agains blacks and that the two attackers of the lady called her a "kaffir lover."

What's up with that? That's an arabic word for "unbelievers" and is not derogatory.

anyone know the lingo of that region?

A.A.

actually, I disagree to a small extent with you sister,

the word "kaffir" can be used derogatorily...

in a hateful situation, any unwanted label is deragtory right?

like, sometimes I feel that the word need not be said...

anyways, lemme get this straight, some whites (I am assuming that they weren't muslim?) in South Africa use "kaffir"? never heard of that. asalaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

its kaffa,, not kaffar. kaffa means black black person in south african slang.
it is used in the same way as people use nigger in America and UK.
different meaning.
here they use the word nigger lover. kaffa lover means the same thing.

Assalamu alaykum,

I came accross the term "kaffir" while reading Nelson Mandela's autobiogray and you're right...it is a derogatory term for black people in South Africa. I'm curious too to know the origin of this word in afrikaans language

This is one definition of the word:

[quote]
In South Africa the word Kaffir is often used in a general way to signify any black native who is not the descendait of an imported slave, but on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony the term ususally restricted to a member of the Amaxosa tribe
