Qur'an memorisation task 2

assalaamu alaikum

Alhumdulillah, lots of people confirmed that they'd completed memorisation task 1; those of you who haven't please let me know so that i can keep my records up-to-date.

The verses i've selected for memorisation in task 2, are famous for the tremendous benefit that they bring yet, in my experience many people haven't actually bothered to memorise them.

They are the first 10 ayaat of surah al-kahf.

Abu Darda' reported Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying:

"If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal." [Muslim 1766]

The Arabic is just over a page, so i've set a tentative deadline for this task is the following Sunday insha'llah, Sunday 12 August.

[1] Alhamdu lillahi allathee anzala 'ala `abdihi-lkitaba wa lam yaj'al lahu 'iwaja.

All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, Who has sent down to His slave (Muhammad SAW) the Book (the Qur'ân), and has not placed therein any crookedness.

[2] Qayyiman li-yunthira ba`san shadeedan min ladunhu wa yubashshira -lmu`mineen allatheena ya'maloona as-saalihati anna lahum ajran hasana

(He has made it) Straight to give warning (to the disbelievers) of a severe punishment from Him, and to give glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allâh Islâmic Monotheism), who work righteous deeds, that they shall have a fair reward (i.e. Paradise).

[3] Maakitheena feehi abada

They shall abide therein forever.

[4] Wa yunthir allatheena qaloo-ttakhatha Allahu walada.

And to warn those (Jews, Christians, and pagans) who say, "Allâh has begotten a son (or offspring or children)."

[5] Ma lahum bihi min 'ilmin wala li-aba-ihim kaburat kalimatan takhruju min afwahihim in yaqooloona illa kathiba.

No knowledge have they of such a thing, nor had their fathers. Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths [i.e. He begot (took) sons and daughters]. They utter nothing but a lie.

[6] Fala'allaka bakhi'un nafsaka 'ala atharihim in lam yu`minoo bihath-alhadeethi asafa

Perhaps, you, would kill yourself (O Muhammad SAW) in grief, over their footsteps (for their turning away from you), because they believe not in this narration (the Qur'ân).

[7] Inna ja'alna ma 'ala al-ardi zeenatan laha li-nabluwahum ayyuhum ahsanu 'amala

Verily! We have made that which is on earth as an adornment for it, in order that We may test them (mankind) as to which of them are best in deeds. [i.e.those who do good deeds in the most perfect manner, that means to do them (deeds) totally for Allâh's sake and in accordance to the legal ways of the Prophet SAW ].

[8] Wa-inna laja'iloona ma 'alayha sa'eedan juruza

And verily! We shall make all that is on it (the earth) a bare dry soil (without any vegetation or trees, etc.).

[9] Am hasibta anna as-haba alkahfi wa-rraqeemi kanoo min ayatina 'ajaba

Do you think that the people of the Cave and the Inscription (the news or the names of the people of the Cave) were a wonder among Our Signs?

[10] Ith awa-lfityatu ila alkahfi fa-qaloo rabbana aatina min ladunka rahmatan wahayyi` lana min amrina rashada

(Remember) when the young men fled for refuge (from their disbelieving folk) to the Cave, they said: "Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!"

Hahahaha, "heart-attacking", that's funny, insha'Allah there will be no heart attacks here, but not a bad way to go if it's due to listening to the qur'aan!   :-)

A powerful du'aa to say after reciting the Qur'an (or at any other time):

O Allah!  I ask You by every name that You have, that You have called Yourself by, that You have taught any of Your Creation, that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You may have kept secret with Yourself.  Make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my breast, the dispeller of my sorrows, the eraser of my anxieties and worries. AMEEN!

Bismillah and salam,
I am almost done al7emdulilah. I think I knew it better than i had thought because we are supposed to read it every Friday.

hadeeth narrated by al7akim 3an abi sa3eed: "man qara' soorat alkahf fi yam aljumua adha'a lahu min annour ma bayn jumuatayn"
meaning (this is my traslation) whoever read the cave soora on friday then s/he will have a light that stays with him till the next two jumuas.

Brother Kashif I hope you don't mind but I would like to share a few things i learnt about those the ten. Like what the best of sayers said the very begginning is "al7emdulilah," i think there are 5 sooras that start with this and they always list some blessings of Alah after. Like the angles, the light and dark, earth, etc. then: "walam naj3al lahu 3iwaja" that there is no crookedness in the book. Shaikh sha3rawi, may he rest in peace, he said something that really got to me. He said isnt' this a strange way to describe a book? why not informative? intersting? whole? why no crookedness??

Because, he said, that if you are trying to get somewhere, you would choose the most direct way to get there. It is shorter therefore easier. Also if you don't have twists and turns then it means your vision in this road is clearer. That is to say, on our journey to jannah, we can take many different ways, but Allah is telling us the Quran is the easiest most clear way for us right now. sub7an Allah!

Another comment i really liked is the fact that when the paradise is mentioned (i think always) it follows by the assurance that people will stay in it forever. But no such thing metntioned in hell unless it is a certain maseer. Which means we may, la qaddar Alalh, go to hell to be punished and then enter jannah of which we will never leave. It is a way of Allah to help us never give up on whatever little good is in us.
"walam naj3al lahu 3iwaja"
.

Walam Yaja'al lahu 'ewaja. (unlike *naj3al*).
I know that was unintentional, InshaAllah, but we have to be very careful with these things. May Allah(swt) guide us all, InshaAllah.

Imam Ahmad recorded that al-Bara' said: "A man recited al-Kahf and there was an animal in the house which began acting in a nervous manner. He looked, and saw a fog or cloud overhead. He mentioned this to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam who said, 'Keep on reciting so and so, for this is the tranquility which descends when one reads Qur'an or because of reading Qur'an.'" [Ahmad]

He also said, "Whoever recited Surat al-Kahf on  Friday, it will illuminate him with light from one Friday to the next." [Sahih, al-Hakim]

Protection from the Dajjal
--------------------------

The Prophet said: "Whoever memorises ten ayat from the beginning of surat al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal." [Ahmad]

Brief tafseer notes
-------------------

"and has not placed therein any crookedness"
meaning, there is nothing twisted or confusing about it, rather it is clear and straighforward.

"to give warning of a severe punishment from Him"
i.e. to warn those who oppose Allah & His Messenger, as none can punish as Allah punishes and no one is stronger.

"and to give good news to the believers that they shall have a fair reward."
those who believe and do good works will be given a beautiful reward by Allah.

"and to warn those who say 'Allah has begotten a child.'"
Ibn Ishaq said that this refers to the pagan arabs who worshipped angels and believed them to be the daughters of Allah.

"Perhaps you would kill yourself in grief, over their footsteps because they believe not in this narration"
The Prophet would desire so much for people to be guided, and feared greatly the awaiting punishment for those who denied Allah to the extent that it would have a physical effect on him, so Allah revealed this ayah, as if saying "do not feel sorry for them, just convey the Message to them. Whoever goes the right way does so for his own benefit, and whoever goes astray then he strays at his own losss, so do not destroy yourself in sorrow for them."

"Verily we have made that which is on earth an adornment for it, in order that We may test which of them are best in deeds."
The Messenger of Allah said: "This world is sweet and green, and Allah makes you generations succeeding one another, so He is watching what you will do. Beware of (the beguilements of) this world and beware of women, for the first test for the Children of Israel was women." [Ahmad]

"And verily, We shall make all that is on it bare, dry soil."
i.e. everything on the earth will be made bare and dry with no vegetation or any other benefit.

"Do you think that the people of al-Kahf and ar-Raqeem were a wonder among Our Signs?"
i.e. the miracle of this story is not something amazing compared to what Allah has done by His power and ability: the creation of the sun and the moon, the day and the night - all these are great signs showing that Allah can do whatever He wills.
ar-Raqeem is the name of the valley or the twon from which the inhabitants of the cave came from.

slm,

br. abdullah, i dont think that its necessary to drop out... i myslef have not memorized all 10 ayahs from surah al-kahf. however, i did read and study the translation and tasfir that br. kashif posted. because school started this week for me, i did not have as much time to memorize. but inshallah i will keep on working on it later when i do have time :) so dont lose hope that you cant keep up. at least stay on top of the quiz part, and do try your best to memorize what you can.. and just keep working on it when you have them time. that way you wont be overwhelmed or fall behind :) the important thing is that you actually remember to finish memorizing later on and not put it off too long.

Bismillah and salam,

Brother Kashif

I just wanted to say jazak Allah khayr for your efforts. What do you think about maybe you write the next assignment along with the quiz. (simple as like the numeric id of the soora and ayas).

That way we have 2 extra weeks or so before you put up the notes to memorize the ayas themselves and then we might be more confident in this task insha'Allah.
