Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah
Henna has to be used on a regular basis if u want to get that colour. One thing to remember is never to use henna alone, mix it with tea/coffee, yogurt and lemon juice befor applying it to clean un-oiled hair. To get the colour, u have to keep it on for at least 2-3 hours. Make sure that it doesn't dry out. You can wear a shower cap to seal in the moisture. Wash it out with lots of water. You can use shampoo but the best thing is to wash it with water and oil the hair after drying, then u can shampoo as usual. If u do this once a week, it usually takes 4-6 weeks before u start getting a noticable colour.

Let us know how it goes :)

Hmm..i've never seen anyones scalp get dyed by henna. Just that when u apply it, do it from the roots but not thaaat close, just enough to cover the hair but not to touch the scalp. Ask someone who has practice in applying it to do it for you. BTW, do u have long hair? If u do then, the application should start from the top (crown??) of the head and keep piling the hair on top as you go along in a circle. This way you have a neat bun on top without a mess. It makes me look like the buddha minus the enlightenment LOL, not that I apply it regularly. Also, be careful not to put the menhdi too close to the hairline, I mean it shouldn't touch the skin on the forehead. And if u're really concerned about the colour on the scalp, then just be careful in the areas where u normally part ur hair. Unless u decide to make something like the african hairstyle (the one where they do lots of french braid type things so they have like a 50 partings on the head) it really doenst matter

yup... unfortunately it's kind of a messy process... i would recommend mixing the powder into a paste and then using your hands (with gloves if u have) to just brush the stuff down on the outside all the way to the tips.. then put that all up in a bun or something and keep it on all day (best to do it on a day ur not praying). it'll just dry and u'll feel like ur wearing a helmut.  then you have to flip your head upside down in a garbage bag and get rid of most of the dry henna stuff and then take a shower.. don't freak out when the water is red :)

henna works really great if you have brownish hair, streaks of light brown etc... but if you have dark black hair.. don't bother.. henna does absolutely NOTHING~~!!!

assalaamu alaikum,
If you have extremely black hair then henna won't work well.  but if
you have dark brown hair then you can get nice red highlights.  But using
henna won't lighten your hair color or change it unless you have
lighter hair color.
The best way to do it, is to make the paste with some tea and lemon
juice to bring out more color.  and let the paste sit for at least an hour
before putting it on.  Then after putting it on wrap your hair with a
plastic bag to keep it moist cause it only is working when the henna is
still wet.  Then keep it on for as long as you can, meaning hours.
Then wash it off.  if you want you can throw in an egg to make your hair
softer.  The highlights usually show up better after your hair has been
washed a few times.
wa alaikum assalaam

wlm,

oh yeah good tip about the plastic bag anonymous... maybe use a shower cap as that's easier.. and it keeps the mess from spreading all over your house!

Assalamualaikum
Jannah, I have to disagree here. It's not a messy thing at all provided u do it the right way. If the hair is long then its next to impossible to do it by urself and u have to have someone help out. One thing that really helps is an applicator, sort of like a small flat paintbrush with softer bristles. It's usually available in any store here, but if u can't get it, try a paint shop :) You have to start the application from the centre of the head and work ur way in concentric circles. In the begining, take a small amount of hair and apply the henna using the brush (almost like painting the hair), then pile that portion on top of the head..it should stick and not fall down. Then, just keep taking small amounts of hair around that small bun, applying the henna and winding it around the bun, so that as u go along u'll have more and more hair in the bun and in the end it'll be a neat and tidy thing. Also, the trick to doing this right is to have the right consistency of the paste. It should be smooth and not too thick. Just enough to stick to the brush and hair but not too thin to run down.
HY, if u have a prepared powder then just go ahead and mix with water. For pure henna u can use something like one heaped tbspn of coffee, two tbspn of yogurt (u can skip this if u have oily hair), a couple of tspn of lemon juice, an egg or two for about one cup of henna powder. You can also omit the coffee and use tea water to make the paste. Its better if the paste sits for a while before application, so u can even prepare it at night and use it in the mornign. Make sure not to let it dry and to wear a shower cap 30-40 min after applying it.

Now if only I weren't too lazy to take my own advice..sighhhh

Word of warning ***if you dye your hair with henna make sure that you don't use store dye products.  The metal in the henna will cause a chemical reaction to the henna and your hair will all break off!!!  This applies to perms/straightening of the hair!!!****
