| Assalamu alaikum, I was reminded by a discussion in the "Oasis" of a question I've been meaning to ask for a while: how do you all (especially sisters) feel about people wearing hijab only sometimes? I mean, of course it's the wrong thing to do, and if you feel the need to simply scold me for not fulfilling my Islamic duties, I will understand. But I converted just a couple of months ago and really don't feel up to it yet (I don't mean to sound flippant about this-- it's something I struggle with and think about constantly, it's just not the issue I want to bring up now). So far, I've worn hijab to the mosque and the odd "Islamic event" (lectures on campus). The rest of the time, I dress decently, but no scarf. I've noticed that reverts frequently do this, at least at first, with the idea that "I need to get used to this slowly." But I've also noticed that, among born Muslims, there seem to be many who are good sisters and devout in every way except that they don't cover, and their rationale seems to be that, "I want to know that once I put it on, I'll never take it off again." Given that neither of these attitudes is 100% acceptable, I can see some sense in both of them, and I'm wondering what others' feelings are about this. What do you think? | Assalamu Alaikum Rachel, May Allah bless you for your struggles and make wearing hijab easy for you, ameen. Speaking from my own subjective opinion I would say that Allah knows what is in your heart and the fact that you are trying is something. I am not saying that you should of course not ultimately wear hijab all the time but that as long as you are struggling to meet that end insha'allah it will be sufficient. Everyone is different; some people are able to begin and end things cold-turkey, while others need to acclimate themselves. Only you know yourself best and only you can decide what the best course for you is with regards to wearing hijab full-time. As for those sisters who choose not to wear hijab because once they wear it they will never take it off and so don't begin wearing it, I don't mean anything offensive for those truly sincere sisters but for many of the sisters that I personally know this tends to be an excuse so that they never begin. Allahu alim. As far as I know there is no consensus as to what the right way is, you can only do what you are ready for. For me personally the way that I was able to begin wearing hijab full time was really learning Allah's names and attributes because they made me realize more than anything else that no one can do me any harm or benefit without the will of Allah, and that as long as I was doing something for Allah's pleasure I couldn't lose. I would advice making alot of dua asking Allah to make it easy for you and insha'allah before you know it you will officially be a full-time hijabi:) If anything I have written has offended anyone in any way please accept my apologisies as that was so not my intention. | [slm] Rachel especially as a new Muslim I think diving into everything and changing your whole life, friends, problems with family, dress etc is alot. Even for ppl born into Muslim families, it is difficult to all of the sudden practice every facet of the deen when you're not ready for it. I think the first issue you're asking is, "Is it ok to wear hijab some of the time and not others". And of course we know islamically hijab is fard.. just like prayer.. just like zakat.. just like jumah for men. So if you don't do one of those things you're not fulfilling a fard. So let's say there is a person who doesn't do all 5 prayers yet.. should they then not pray at all until they're ready to do all 5? or let's say we're not ready to do zakat so let's just forget this whole islam thing because we want to wait until we'll be able to do everything... does it happen?? sure does.. there are many nonmuslims that never end up coming to islam because someone, somewhere has told them that they have to do "EVERYTHING" and if they can't don't bother... the problem with this is that people are human and to really implement permanent change it takes time. the sahaba did not turn into the people they were overnight.. and surely any great muslim you can think of wasn't born being a perfect muslim their entire life. i think what you should concentrate on right now is gaining knowledge.. find out why is this allowed in islam.. why isn't this allowed.. what do hadiths say.. what does quran say and concentrate on increasing your imaan by being with good muslims...sharing with them.. learning... this invariably pushes people to action later on... i've never seen anyone start wearing hijab one day when they hadn't been without an increase in their knowledge or iman... else why would they eh?? as for wearing it sometimes and not others.. why not make your intention that inshallah one day you'd like to wear it full time when you have the courage.. but wearing it right now sometimes is encouraging you and getting you used to it. just take care never to become stagnant, active gradualism is the key and i'll tell you something else.. i never wore hijab until college... and i did wear it to islamic events etc and honestly if i never wore it to those things i would never have even thought of wearing it full time one day...because it is too huge of a step, too far from not wearing to all of a sudden wearing full time.. so take the baby steps inshaAllah and increase your knowledge and imaan and as you take your step know that Allah takes two towards you, and as you take more know that Allah runs to you. |
