Ayat or Hadith for a recipe book

I am the last of the cooks in my family. My brothers have asked me to compile a book of the traditional Czech recipies for their families.

I am writing a "dedication page" and want to include an ayat or hadith, with the thought that a couple of generations will come accross it once in awhile.

Does anyone have a great ayat/ hadith that I could use, that won't get their backs up against the wall?

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

Sis Kathy... I think it is  a great idea... a family heirloom, mashaALlah... with Allah's ayats embedded...

OK, here are some ayahs. I don't know whether it is useful for the book, but hope it is, inshaAllah :-)

Al Baqarah 2:267
O ye who believe! Give of the good things which ye have (honourably)
earned, and of the fruits of the earth which We have produced for you, and do not even aim at getting anything which is bad, in order that out of it ye may give away something, when ye yourselves would not receive it except with closed eyes. And know that God is Free of all wants, and worthy of all praise.

Ibrahim 14:32
It is God Who hath created the heavens and the earth and sendeth down
rain from the skies, and with it bringeth out fruits wherewith to feed you; itis He Who hath made the ships subject to you, that they may sail through the sea by His command; and the rivers (also) hath He made subject to you.

Ibrahim 14:37
"O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in a valley
without cultivation, by Thy Sacred House; in order, O our Lord, that they may establish regular Prayer: so fill the hearts of some among men with love towards them, and feed them with fruits: so that they may give thanks"

Al Mu'minun 23:19
With it We grow for you gardens of date-palms and vines: in them have
ye abundant fruits: and of them ye eat (and have enjoyment),-

An Nahl 16:67
And from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food: behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise.

Al Hajj 22:34
To every people did We appoint rites (of sacrifice), that they might
celebrate the name of God over the sustenance He gave them from animals (fit for food). But your God is One God: submit then your wills to Him (in Islam): and give thou the good news to those who humble themselves,

Ash-Shuara 78-83
(My Lord) Who has created me, and it is He who guides me, and it is He who feeds me and gives me to drink, and when I am ill, it is He who cures me , and Who will cause me to die, and then will bring me to life (again), and who, I hope will forgive my faults on the Day of Recompense. My Lord! Bestow on me wisdom, and join me with the righteous

Ar Rahman:10-13
It is He Who has spread out the earth for (His) creatures: Therein is fruit and date-palms, producing spathes (enclosing dates); also corn with leaves and stalk for fodder and sweet smelling plants. Then, which of the favours of your Lord do you deny?

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

This really is a very good idea. Sis Barr has given nice collection, just to add to it :

007.031
YUSUFALI: O Children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah loveth not the wasters.
PICKTHAL: O Children of Adam! Look to your adornment at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but be not prodigal. Lo! He loveth not the prodigals.
SHAKIR: O children of Adam! attend to your embellishments at every time of prayer, and eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely He does not love the extravagant

35:12
Nor are the two bodies of flowing water alike,- the one palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink, and the other, salt and bitter. Yet from each (kind of water) do ye eat flesh fresh and tender, and ye extract ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the Bounty of Allah that ye may be grateful.

80:24-32
Then let man look at his food,
That We pour forth water in abundance,
And We split the earth in clefts,
And We cause therein the grain to grow,
And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle),
And olives and date-palms,
And gardens, dense with many trees,
And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.),
(To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle.

I'm sure u must be dividing the cookbook into sections, so instead of including the ayah only on the dedication page, why not include an appropriate one at the beginning of every section?..I mean like if you have a part on vegetarian dishes then u can put an ayah about plants , one on seafood could have somehting like 35:12 (given above)etc .....Just a thought :)

wassalam

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Here is a Hadith on bread and vinegar:

Jabir ibn Abdullah, a companion of the Prophet [saw] who has reported numerous Hadiths, was visited by a number of the Prophet's [saw] companions. He offered them bread and vinegar, and said: "Please have something to eat. I heard God's messenger [saw] say: 'Vinegar is good food to eat with bread. It ruins a person who has some of his friends visiting him and he disdains what he has at home of food to offer them, and it is ruinous for them to disdain what is offered to them'." (Related by Al-Hakim and Abu Ya'la).

Assalaamu alaikum, Kathy

How about Al-Fatiha?  Has nothing to do with food, but hey, it's great for non-Muslims, can't go wrong with that.
Good luck!
