| Zaroorii Nahin Hai... Salaam, This message is for se7en. We hope all of you like it. It is an Urdu Poem I really like. For those of you who do not know urdu I will write the translation but later: Zaroorii nahin hai jo saahil kii geelii khushk ret par, Haath mein haath de kar, Safar aur talaatum ke qissey sunaaye, Jazeeron, hawaon aur rangon ke an-dekhey mausam Aur aankhon se ojhal kinaaron par khare hue, Manzaron, zayaqon aur rangon kii baaten karey, Woh in waardaaton se guzraa bhii ho... Gar kahey aao in pareshaan maujon kaa peechaa karen, Jo tere aur mere qadam choomtii hain, Talaatum kii be-naam manzil se guzartii hain, Yeh dekhen kissey dhoondtii hain, To chalne se pehle zaraa soch lenaa, Zaroorii nahin hai jo in an-dekhey raaston ki khabren sunaaye, Woh in raaston ka shanaasa bhi ho... With such a remarkable entry (at least for the urdu speakers), we'd like to get an intro from you in the bebzi stand :) And anything you can spill about se7en's urdu skills, or lack thereof, you get added bonus for that ;) Here's my *attempted* translation. As always, the true beauty is lost, but the meaning is still there ... somewhat ... (Urdu speakers: don't laugh!) It’s not necessary that the one who stands on top of the wet, sandy beach Away from the rest of the world With his hands clasped in your hands And speaks to you about the tales of his travels and adventures And scenes and tastes and colors that you have never seen or experienced, In the midst of islands, winds and climates with strange colors – It’s not necessary that this person has been through all that he claims in his talks If he says to you, “Come let’s follow these distraught waves That come to kiss your feet and mine And then return to an ocean of adventure and chaos; Let’s go and find out what these waves are searching for” Then before you walk along with him, beware! It’s not necessary that he who speaks about these unseen trails Has tread the trails himself before It may be that when you jump in the ocean to tread these trails And look for him around you You see him standing back on the shore, with nothing but a grin playing on his lips … |

| Assalamu alaikum, That's a nice poem. Although, the English translation will kill its glamour but for others who do not know/speak Urdu, it has to be translated. Sister se7en, better watch urself :), because this poem is a warning.:) Btw, sister, u copied it from somewhere? or wrote it urself? I like the last 2 lines particularly, as they contain the "moral". | Salaam, First of all thank you everyone for the compliments. Actually someone just gave me the idea to write an Urdu poem here. As for my introduction, my name is Saima and I have a twin sister. We were born in Saudi Arabia but we don't know any Arabic. We do know Urdu, as a matter of fact we love Urdu Poetry. We are from Pakistan, but we didn't live there long. I have two elder brothers. That is quite much all for my introduction. And that was a nice translation Arsalan. Actually you translated it better than I could. :) Se7en is a very good friend of ours from high school. We used to meet in the Muslim club of our school and she was really good in it. I agree, she doesn't know much Urdu but at least she tries...! :) I didn't write the poem myself. I think it is written by Amjad Islam Amjad (a Pakistani poet). So that is all. I will write another poem/ghazal later for all of you. Wassalaam, S&Z |

Mehek, khudi ko kar bhuland itna ki harr taqdeer se pehle khuda bandeh se khudd poocheh bata tarey raza kya hai 8-) And some verses of my own: oh mehek, meri chappali, meri murghi, jack kahaan hai? shide woh petrol station be ho.. Tum "sal" lerki ho? hum aapke hain kaun? tumaraa dil to pagal hai or dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge --- end --- beautiful, I know :P too much pepsi + too little sleep = some crazy conversations at 3 am on IM ;) welcome to the board mehek.. :) dont do anything I wouldn't do aiite ;) wasalaamu alaykum. |

| Salaam ppl, Thanks a bunch se7en. It took you SOOO long to think of a reply? :o And such a NICE poem you have written for me. I think you should be included in the many respected poets of Pakistan and India. ;) And that other one from Ilaama Iqbal is also nice. He would have been so happy to meet such a nice poet as you are. (hehehe) Now I don't have anything to say except that you are a wonderful friend. Are you a "sal" girl? What am I to you? You heart is crazy. The heart-man will take the brid away. ;------------------ I didn't know Se7en knew so much Urdu. |

To the graveyard all dressed up s/he came Seeing the coffin he said with a chuckle Today how exalted/promoted I have become That a homeless has gotten a nice home Sheher e goshaan mein ban thun kar aaye woh, Qabr dekhi to hans kar yeh kehne lage, Aaj itnii to iss ki taraqqii huii, Keh ek beghar ne acha sa ghar le liya... [/quote] Hmmmmmmm.....I wont go for the translation because it has already been translated by Br. Asim, but I can explain what these four lines actually mean. 'ban thun kar aaye woh' signifies a female. So, a female (whom the Poet apparently loves) has come to visit the poet's grave and seeing his grave, she says such words sarcastically that: finally, today , he has atleast prospered so much that the homeless has a nice home now ( The grave has been symbolized with home, and 'hans kar yeh kehne lage' represents sarcasm). Hope I made sense! Anyways, that's a sad poem sister S&Z. Come up with something cheerful like sister se7en showed up with her own 'brilliant' poetry. ;) No offence , Please. Wassalam. |

| Here's one of my favorites from Iqbal I like: Cheen-o-Arab hamara, Hindustan hamara Muslim main hum, watan hai sara jahan hamara Tauheed ki amanat senon main hai hamarey Asan nahin mitana naam-o-nishaan hamara Duniya kay bu't kadon main, wo pehla ghar Khuda ka Hum uss kay pasban hain, wo pasban hamara Baatil say dabney waley, aey Asman! nahin hum Sou baar ker chuka hai Tu imtihan hamara Salar-e-Karwan hai Meer-e-Hijaaz (PBUH) apna Iss naam say hai baaqi, aaram-e-jahan hamara Iqbal ka tarana baang-e-dara hai goya Hota hai jada paima, phir karwan hamara and feel free to translate.... |

| [slm] Taueeya, I think you have misinterpreted that verse. The poet is talking to himself, and about himself. The soul relates to us the burial of the body in which it once resided. As the body is laid to rest in the grave, the soul utters the eulogical words of the verse. The body belongs to a poor man or woman who never had enough to get by in their lives. And could never afford to buy a dwelling place for themselves. Alas, death brought with it at least one reward ... a place to live! A place that they could call "home." Wassalamu alaikum. P.S. Jannah, Iqbal is best left untranslated! I will not dare mess with his eloquence ... |

| Assalamu Alaikum, Maybe, I did misinterpret it. Its been seven years since I stopped reading Urdu poetry. One of the things that I really like about Urdu poetry is that it can be interpreted into several meanings, like, I remember, during my college days, when we used to read Urdu poetry (which was a part of our Urdu syllabus), there were many poems written on 'Ishq'(Love). But one could easily interpret them as if the poet was talking about his love with Allah (swt), called as 'Ishq-e-haqiqi', or it could also be interpreted as the poet talking about his love with another human (male/female), called as 'Ishq-e-Majaazi'. As I read the verses again and again here, the words sound very materialistic in meaning, rather than spiritual. The words like 'ban thun ker', 'hans ker yeh kehne lage', 'taraqqi', 'beghar', 'acha sa ghar', they dont look like as if a soul would say that. Whatever, man, maybe I am not making sense........... I am waiting for the reply from sister se7en. :) |

(Ameen) :) [/quote] Ameen! :P It could have something to do with the lack of encouragement from my family :( Once I tried to say "teek tak" -- (which means like, everything's good, something along those lines) and my bro goes, "is there a clock in here?" (ie - tick tock) *sigh* the troubles I go through.. No no akhi.. you don't *consume* the pepsi at 3 am.. you drink it periodically throughout the day.. but if you've had enough, the effects will start to kick in around 3 am :) Try it sometime! It's an.. interesting experience :) As for the actual urdu poetry stuff, I can't help you there. My Urdu is limited to when my mom yells at me or when some auntie mistakes me for an "achee bachee" who cooks samosas and 'knows her mother tongue' like s & z.. Btw, FYI, Pepsi has caffeine in it which can cut down ur sleep. So, too much pepsi periodically throughout the day, naturally gets u to sleep less. :) Wassalam. |
