Sewing-related tips

By Anis Sidddiqi

To thread needles easily, dip the end of the thread in clear nail polish. It will dry in seconds and pass through the smallest hole. This is also ideal in threading very small beads through which a needle cannot pass.

Keep a magnet in your sewing basket. It's ideal for picking up fallen pins and needles.

If you are used to working with a thimble and there's none around, a good substitute is a small coin on the tip of your finger held with scotch tape. Painting several coats of clear nail polish on your fingertips also works just as well.

When you need to tighten your sewing machine belt, remove it and soak it in cold water. Then hang it in the sun to dry.

To avoid breaking the sewing machine needle when sewing coarse material, rub it first with soap.

Cotton fabrics are easier to cut and sew if starched previously.

If you need a very special shade of thread to darn or hem, unravel a thread from the cut edge of the material and use like ordinary thread.

To sharpen scissors, cut through sandpaper. Another method is to run it through the necks of a glass bottle as if trying to cut it off.

When hand-sewing for a long stretch of time, put a small pillow or cushion on your lap to rest your arm on.

When sewing on snap buttons, do so with the buttonhole stitch. It will never come off then.

An old light bulb is ideal for darning socks. Just stick it into the heel or toe to be mended and stretch the material.

Clean rust from your needles by pressing them into a bar of soap.

Stick your needle into a bar of soap every so often when doing a lot of sewing. This will make your work go much faster since the needle will glide through the cloth.

Fill your pin cushion with steel wool and your pins will stay sharp and rust-free.

When sewing thin fabrics like nylon, georgette or chiffon, place some tissue paper on the material and then machine sew. This prevents puckering and tearing.

Loosely woven fabric will not fray around the button holes if it has a thin coat of clear nail polish painted at the place of the button-hole. Let it dry, then cut carefully and do the button-hole stitch carefully.

To have long-lasting buttons, put a dot of clear nail polish over the threads and they will not come undone.

If you are in a hurry and have no time, but see that a button is about to become undone, wrap scotch tape around the threads. This will prevent it from coming off till you have time to sew it.

To have stronger buttons on coats and clothes that get heavy-dutv wear, sew a smaller button on the back of the bigger one.

Giving knowledge a wider meaning :) Isn't it useful to our Ummah, too?
