Stain removing tips

By Anis Siddiqi

Most stains are easier to remove if they are fresh. That is if you act fast enough. If the stains are old, they are harder to treat. So, act fast if you want those stains removed. Known stains can be removed with certain chemicals or ingredients. But if you don't know what caused the stains, then the best thing to do is to first wash it with soap and water. If that doesn't work use a weak solution of borax or hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of ammonia.

An important thing to remember is that hydrogen peroxide, ammonia or methylated spirits sometimes fade some fabrics. So it is very important that you test first on an inconspicuous place. Another thing to remember is that stains should always be dabbed, never rubbed. Rubbing can damage the structure of the threads, leaving a permanent mark even if the stain has been removed.

Whatever is being applied, put a clean white pad under the stain and keep renewing as the stain loosens.

It is usually better to wash or dry-clean the whole item after removing the stain.

Some common stains

TEA: Generally, if immediately washed with soap and water, the stain is removed. But if not, apply lemon juice to the stain and bleach in the sun. Or, apply glycerine and leave for a while, then wash with soap and water.

COFFEE: If stains cannot be removed with soap and warm water, pour on boiling water from a height of 2 to 3 feet. With silks, put between clean damp cloths and press with a hot iron.

FRUITS: If stains are fresh, pour on boiling water from a height of 2 to 3 feet. If this is unsuccessful, apply lemon juice to the stain and bleach in the sun. For stubborn stains, try washing with hot milk, white vinegar, or a solution of 1 1/2 teaspoonfuls of borax and 250 mls of water.

EGG: Wash with cold water and soap. If it doesn't work, use a solution of borax and water in the proportion mentioned above.

GRASS: Apply glycerine on the stain and then wash with soap and water. Another method is to rub the stain between the finger and thumb with moist toilet soap.

LIPSTICK: Oil of eucalyptus is the best lipstick stain remover. Dab it on, being very careful not to smear it any further, and leave it to soak. Then wash with soap and lukewarm water. Glycerine and petroleum jelly also remove lipstick stains.

GREASE: Usually washing off with warm water and soap does the trick. But if it doesn't, or when the fabric is silk or wool, place clean white blotting paper on either side of the stain, and iron with a warm iron. Or, cover the stain with talcum powder, leave it on for some time, then brush it off.

PERSPIRATION: Use soap and warm water, then bleach in the sun. If the stain is stubborn, use ammonia, vinegar or lemon juice on the stain.

BLOOD: When the stain is fresh it can easily be washed with soap and water. If dry, soak the stain in a salt solution -- 30 gms of salt in a liter of water -- for up to an hour. Then wash. A few dropsof ammonia may be added.

PAINT- Dip in acetone and squeeze out. Material need not be washed after if acetone is used. If acetone is not available, use turpentine or kerosene, then wash with warm water and soap.

RUST: Rub lemon juice and a little salt on the stains and bleach in the sun. Repeat or add more lemon juice if necessary.

SCORCH MARKS: Dab the stain with hydrogen peroxide. Another method is applying a mixture of 60 gms of fullers earth, 250 ml of vinegar and 2-3 chopped onions boiled together, then left to get cold. Apply this, leave to dry, then wash off.

BALLPOINT INK: Place the stain over blotting paper, then dab with methylated spirit or eau de cologne. Milk and hair sprays also work wonders in removing ballpoint marks.

WRITING INK: Soak the ink stains in milk or yogurt, then wash with soap and water. Or, rub with lemon juice or salt, then wash off.

These are really interesting..especially the one for the ball point pen....one more thing for spilt tea/coffee; if as soon as it is spilt, u sprinkle talcum powder on it, the talc soaks the liquid and the stain is much lighter and easier to remove. I've used this a couple of times, when I was drinking tea sitting on the bed LOL

Assalaamu alaikum,
pour on boiling water from a height of 2 to 3 feet.
What is the significance of pouring water from 2 to 3 feet? Why not 4 inches? Is there a particular velocity with which water should strike the cloth for the stain to be removed?? Kinda weird, maybe there is some scientific reason behind it or the writer is trying to be come across as 'sophisticated' :)

Wasalaam.

Take an Iron on low low heat
Put a papertowel on top of wax and iron lightly until wax is absorbed.  Change paper towel very frequently.

the ice thing works with chewing gum. The best thing actually is to put the whole garment in the freezer for a couple of hours and then you can just scrape off the chewing gum. I tried this...it works well and no problems with flimsy fabric.

ps: I was going to suggest the iron for candle wax but Sr.Kathy beat me to it!!
