In your respective countries:

Is there an age that a man stops working and his children begin to support the father and mother?

[slm],

In my country (India), a man *has* to stop working at either 58 or 60 unless he has his own business. If they dont the unemployment rate will soar higher.

Parents try to make their children independent before they retire. A lot of times this becomes a difficult task especially in not so well to do families.

And people try not to retire before their predetermined age, so they can support their family financially as long as they can and get all childrent settled.

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

In Singapore... retirement age is 63, but one can opt for early retirement at 55.

Afetr their retirement, they can gain access to their Central Provident Funds (CPF) account. When they work, 20% of their monthly salary is deducted and an addition of 10 or 12% of their monthly pay is contributed by their employer and is added to the CPF each month. This accumulated amount can only be accessed after retirement in hard cash. Usually, it can run up to hundreds of thousands. So, those who have a lot of $$$ in this account do not depend on their children.

Before retirement, they can only use this to pay for mortages and some other stuff.. which is quite rigid.

For those who do not have enough, then, they would depend on their children, if not I think their quite independent.

But most of us would already contribute to the family as a whole (not necessarily to the father as the father may still be working and is the main breadwinner) once we start working.... so we just continue giving, and perhaps give more when our parents can no longer support themselves.

And children would give... say a portion of their salary to their parents... Theoretically, more children, more money, I guess... but then again it depends on responsibilities and amt of earnings of their children. Plus, we don't usually send our parents to homes... they usually live with us in their old age... inshaAllah, so... no bills and rents for them... *hmm sounds so materialistic*.

But, yeah.. some parents prefer to live alone... independence, they say... Sometimes, it's not about age, but about the ability of the man to support himself.

There's no hard and fast rules....
Allahua'lam. :-)

P.S. Do I sound like a robot or what?
