[center]Flower arrangements

When someone gives you flowers or if you buy them, the first thing that you should do before arranging them is to re-cut the stems, preferably under water so no airlock can form in the stem which prevents water from reaching the flower head. Stems which bleed should then be seared with a flame and those with woody stems (except roses) hammered. Finally, give the flowers a good drink right up to their necks in lukewarm water in a cool dark place. Keep them there till the next day before arranging.

If you run out of pinholders, wires or oasis, the next best support is scotch-tape. First fill the vase with water to avoid getting the tape wet. Then make a noughts and crosses grid with the tape, running it well down for firmness.

When buying flowers make sure they are fresh. The way to do this is to look at the stems below the water-line. Those that have been in the shop too long have slimy stems. There is also no sheen on the petals of old flowers and the pollen falls off easily. Don't buy flowers with these signs.

Always carry flowers with the heads down. This way there is less chance of flowers bending or breaking.

If your vases have become stained and smelly, the way to remove the stains as well as get rid of the smell is to wash it with a mixture of salt, vinegar and water. If the stains or smell is too bad, fill the vase with the mixture and leave it overnight.

Flower arrangements wilt under sunshine or strong draughts. So avoid keeping them directly under a fan or near a door or window where they are exposed to sun and wind.

If the stem of one of your flowers is bent you can still use it in your arrangement by pushing a pin or a toothpick through the centers of the bent portions.

Some leaves are beautiful and you wish you could preserve them. Well, you can. First submerge them in water for a few hours. Then gently dry them with a soft towel. Apply a coating of clear plastic emulsion all over the leaves and stems. They will now last a long time without withering or getting discolored.

When potted plants can't be watered for a couple of weeks, water them before leaving. Stand each pot separately in big plastic bags and tie it around the stems of the plant. Do not leave it in direct sunlight. The plastic bag conserves all the moisture in the pot.

Hairpins or clips painted green are ideal for holding creepers and vines invisibly in place.

When potting plants, put your old worn out sponges on the bottom of your pots before putting in the soil. They'll hold the moisture and give good drainage.

To prune rose without getting stabbed, hold on to the limbs with a pair of pliers.

Your prize blooms can be protected in the garden from heavy rain by placing a plastic bag over the flowers like a hood.

An old shoe-horn makes a handy trowel for digging around potted plants to loosen the soil. It is also very useful for reaching deep into the pot to ease out a plant for transplanting.

I actually thought these tips were pretty interesting. It doesn't have to be moved necessarily. Maybe some sisters can find some tips that would help out brothers as well and post them there...

I'm glad to hear that some people still take the time and effort of picking out flowers instead of ordering them online ;)

wlm,

I'd never order flowers online if I didn't have to. They are eXTREMEly expensive.. In the shop the prices are much more reasonable and you can actually pick out the best quality ones, colors, textures etc...
i think not..
