Most of us have experienced jet lag, when we traveled across time zones. Jet lag -- fatigue, lethargy, inability to sleep, instability and sometimes an upset stomach or lack of appetite -- is caused by rapid time changes, our bodies being used to different time cycles. Though we cannot change the times to our liking, we can do certain things to take the zap out of jet lag.

Set your watch to the new destination time at least three days before the flight. Try eating and sleeping according to those times.

Sleep more than you usually do, even if it's an extra 15 minutes the last few nights before you travel. {Note by Haniff: Not at the cost of prayers, though ;-)}

Fly by day if possible. This way you reach your destination by night giving you time to rest before starting off your day the next morning.

Drink plenty of fluids during your flight. Plane cabins are usually very dry, dehydrating you to a certain extent. This in turn aggravates jet lag.

Be quiet and relax during the flight. {Don't think of the Madina Board - Haniff ;-)} This way your body will not be overstressed.

After arriving, start adapting to the new times as soon as possible. The longer you take, the worse jet lag gets.

Exercise. Exercising pumps up the body and helps you be alert.

Earaches

Earaches are something that often bother some travelers by air. These are caused by changes in air pressure at different heights. Though there is no cure, there are certain things you can do to lessen the pain and discomfort.

When your ears begin to ache, pinch your nostrils shut, take a mouthful of air and then, using your cheek and throat muscles, force the air into the back of your nose as if you were trying to blow your fingers off the end of your nose. A pop will tell you when you have equalized the pressure inside and outside your ear.

Chew a wad of gum. The muscular action of chewing will open the Eustachian tubes.

Yawn. Yawning moves the muscles which open the Eustachian tubes.
Don't sleep during an airplane's descent. If you must doze, do so at the beginning of the flight. You don't swallow as often when you're asleep, so your ears won't keep up with pressure changes during the descent and they may hurt.

Traveler's diarrhea

Here are a few tips to lessen the chances of your getting traveler's diarrhea.

Avoid uncooked vegetables, especially salads, fruits you can't peel and undercooked meat. Eat only easily digested solids.

Drink plenty of water, taking only bottled water if possible. If you can't get bottled water, drink whatever is available. Hydrating yourself is better than worrying about purity.

Drink acidic drinks like colas and orange juice when possible. They take care of the organisms responsible for digestive distress.

Ahhh being a frequent flyer I can attest to these...

Definitely definitely drink lots of water... being dehydrated while traveling makes everything PAINFUL... not to mention being SLEEP DEPRIVED i know everyone stays up the night before traveling putting everything together and all but TRY not to.. and the night before the night before try to get some good rest.. that will help out alot.

as for exercise this is of course a general rule of life.. gives you more energy and believe it or not you won't feel as tired as much..

gum is a good trick..the chewing action keeps your ears from being filled with fluid...

avoid uncooked veggies.. that's a general travel rule.. same as NOT drinking the local water.. don't drink local water as a general rule.. no matter WHERE u go even in the US... water differs alot and has different minerals and stuff.. i've seen ppl get sick b/c of local water and have done so as well.. ALWAYS drink bottled water.. it'll save u...

so Haniff... cleaning tips for akhwat and flying tips for ikhwan... not saying anything.. just interesting... :)

Lisha and Nehar were almost taking issue with me for encroaching on their preserve. So, I posted this one here just to silence them :)

Insha Allah, more to follow....
