Where's the Mithai?

Last night I attended a wedding and for desert they had the most incredible mithai I have tried.  It was imported/flown in from some place on the east coast.  We have this ambala sweets out here but it is no where as good as this mithai.  I had this pista-burfi, hmmmmmmmm, and the taste was incredible.  It was a little gooey, which i thought was odd for burfi.  My personal favorites are pista-burfi (pistachio burfi) (kalakund is good too, and less sweet) and kaju-burfi (burfi made with cashews)

Does anyone know of any good mithai places?  ???

Mona, mithaai is a genre of sweets found in the Indian subcontinent.  There are many different kinds.  Some are dry, some are juicy.

Some popular mithaais:

Gulaab jaaman
Chamcham
Baloo Shahi
Jalebi
Laddoo
Barfi
Qalaaqand
Rass malaaee
Emurtee
Pateesa

I don't know how any of these are made ... maybe someone else can give some recipes here!

Wassalamu alaikum.

slm,

Bhaloo, the most famous mithai place on the East Coast is Shaheen's mithai.  We always order from her store.  Its based in NYC I believe, but they ship everywhere!  Maybe that's where it was from?

I'm not a big fan of indo-pak sweets (though I'll take a brownie any day!) but their kalaqand is good yo!

At Pakistani weddings/mehndi's its customary to feed the bride various forms of mithai.  Well for my brother's wedding, his bride (my close friend), asked me not to feed her that stuff because it makes her sick.  So the day of the mehndi, I made little ball shaped rice krispie treats with yellow food coloring (to make them look like laddo) and we fed those to her!  They were quite a hit among us uncultured desi kids. ;)

Take Care,
Wassalam,
Nazia

Mona, since you are in the Toronto area (or close to it), if you visit Gerrard street (little India/Pakistan) you can visit a mithai (sweet) store there and try them for yourself.  I recommend the burffi or kalakund. Here is a recipe for Kalakand (my favorite mithai) that i saw on the web.

Kalakand

1/2 kg paneer
1 tin condensed milk
3-4 cardamoms powder
2 heaped tbsp full cream milk powder
1 silver leaf

Method:
Mash paneer coarsely and add milk powder to it. Add condensed milk and mix well.
Heat the mixture in a thick bottomed pan. Cook on medium heat with constant stirring till the mixture becomes thick
Remove from fire and spread onto a greased plate. Sprinkle the cardamom powder.
Top with silver leaf. Cool and cut into squares.
Makes: 15-20 pieces
Preparation time: 20 minutes

I haven't heard of Shaheen's mithai, but since all of you guys recommend it, I need to try it out.  What's their website address?

I'm not a ladoo fan at all, although my dad likes ladoo.

Shaheen's is in Jackson Hts., NY. My dad spent some of his college years in NY and always raves about Shaheen's and the good food from back home he enjoyed there :) So whenever we go to NY we have to make a stop for Shaheen's :)

asalaamu alaikum,
easiest mitai to make is andai ki mitai and actually tastes good.  If
anyone wants to try it here is the recipe.

6 eggs
1 block of philly cream cheese
1 can of sweetend condensed milk

Preheat oven to 350.  Blend all the ingredients in a blender.  pour
into a pan.  Bake for about 35-60 minutes (baking time varies, check on it
every 5 minutes or so).  Its done when the fork comes out fairly clean.
Don't worry if you see the mitai getting all big and puffy, it will go
down.  Take it out of the oven when done, allow to cool, cut into
squares and eat (not for people with high cholesterol).  May not sound good,
but trust me, it is :)

Assalamu alaikum,

Thanks to all for elaborating on the different types of mithai (is it pronounced mit-hai?)  I got a taste of some of it  at a friend's wedding last month, the gullab jaman and the ras malee (sp?) - they were yummy.

We have something similar to gullab jaman in middle eastern cuisine, we call it 3wwameh (or luqmah in turkish), but it is crunchier and usually more abstract in shape than spherical (when I make it) !

Hey Arshad, you seem to know your way in Toronto.

I've had the crunchy gulab-jamun type desert in a Persian restaurant before, its not bad.

Actually I've never been to Toronto before, I've just hear of Gerrard Street, and Jackson Heights in NY, and Devon Street in Chicago and out here we have Pioneer Blvd in the city of Cerritos. :)

Is this place any good?  They have online ordering.

I tried some mithai the other day from a place in Chicago called:

Tahoora Sweets
2326 W. Devon Avenue

They ship all over the world, and let me tell you the burffy was incredible.  I recommend it, and since a few of you will be there for ISNA, you might want to check it out. :)
