| ... Is that all you think about? [slm] I'm going through a state of confusion and I hope, Insha Allah, that some of you will be able to help me throught it. My problem is that wherever I turn people will say to me: "Oh, don't read books by that person", "This person belongs to some group that has a dodgy aqeedah" or "Don't go to that talk/conference 'cos some of the speakers are members of wayward groups". Now, I've yet to read a book or article or hear a talk by someone who says "What I say here is not the path of the Prophet Muhummad [saw]". Everyone thinks that they are on the path of the sunnah and the pious predecessors. The only thing I am clear about is the source of my confusion. If everyone claims to follow the sunnah and yet views others who purport to be on the same path as wayward, how is a humble, ignorant muslim like myself supposed to see the wood for the trees? Honestly, in the past couple of weeks I have been advised against reading books and attending talks by people such as Hamza Yusuf, Siraj Wahaj, Jamal Badawi, Syed Qutb to name a few. I'm reminded of a comment that a brother on this board once made obliquely (brother, don't worry, I'm aware that I'm paraphrasing you and perhaps taking you out of context and so any disclaimers to that comment that you might wish to make are duly heeded!!): try to avoid learning from indirect sources. However, fluency in Arabic for me is a long way off, and the level of knowledge to recognise and understand the direct sources perhaps even further. What's a brother to do? If they are giving you proof from Quran and Sunnah as explained by the Prophet pbuh and his companions, then there is no problem. Don't follow any one scholar to the point that you do not look at where they are getting their proof from and check it (this takes a bit of work). We should benefit from their knowledge and leave the things we are not sure of. No one is perfect. Not even scholars and they will make mistakes as will we. Make dua for Allah swt to guide you. |

| read what you want to read. If some thing makes sense it is true until proved otherwise else it is false until proven otherwise. devients sects are the ones who have got some thing to fear from people reading stuff not published by them, cause truth is clear and so is falsehood. if you pick up a doggy idea from a devient book, then it would be easy for people to prove it is doggy. |
