Take the odor of onions off your hands by rubbing them with baking soda.

Get rid of the smell of kerosene or turpentine on your hands by rubbing vinegar on them.

Many of us love fish, but who can stand the odor left on your hands after preparing them. Wet your hands and rub them with bicarbonate of soda. The fishy odor will vanish.

Most other smells on your hands will go away with lemon. Just rub some lemon juice on them.

Before applying and rubbing your hands with anything to rid them of smells, it is important that you wash them first. But remember to use cold water when washing because hot water opens the pores and lets the smell penetrate, after which it is difficult to get rid of the smell.

Get rid of the fish smell from the pan in which it has been cooked by filling it with water, adding a good dash of vinegar and boiling it up.

Cabbage gives off a foul smell when cooking. To stop that, place a piece of bread on top, or put a walnut or bay leaf in the water. Or, don't cover it when cooking.

To get rid of the smell of paint in a newly painted room, put a cut up onion in a pan of water in the middle of the room. This absorbs the paint smell and doesn't give off any onion smell. Or burn a mixture of charcoal and juniper berries in the room. Or put a few drops of oil of lavender in the paint itself before painting. There will be no smell then.

Deodorize your kitchen by boiling a handful of cloves in several cups of water for 20 minutes, or heat some vinegar on the stove.

To remove cooking odors from a room, put a little cologne on a light bulb and turn it on.

Deodorize the refrigerator by putting an open box of baking soda in it. Or put a dish with a ball of cotton soaked in vanilla. Or put some loose charcoal in the fridge -- this will absorb the smell.

Some people have a problem of smelly shoes. Sprinkle a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda into each shoe and shake it all over the inside. By morning the smell will be gone.

If the smell in your clothes does not go, rub a roll-on deodorant on to it, especially where there is more smell, and leave it to soak for a while before rinsing it off.

Plastic containers start giving off a smell after some time. To get rid of it, fill it up with a solution of water (500 ml) and bicarbonate of soda (2-3 teaspoons) and leave it overnight.

If your steel knife starts giving off a foul odor, just plunge it into the earth several times.

Sometimes the dishwasher gives off a funny smell. To deodorize it, pour some orange juice in the detergent dispenser and turn it on without anything in it.

To get rid of the smell in the room where people have been smoking, just place some dishes of water about the room. These will absorb the smelh, or place a bowl of vinegar in the room and the smell of the smoke will vanish.

Get rid of bad breath by chewing and swallowing half a lemon -- pith, rind an dall -- every now and then. Chewing cardamom or cloves are also effective, though less so than lemon. Gargling with a mixture of rose-water and lemon juice 3 or 4 times a day for several days also gets rid of bad breath.

If you perspire a lot, personal hygiene is the most important thing. Next comes the use of a good deodorant. Also, eat plenty of fresh mint leaves. With time, your perspiration will stop smelling.
