| Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh [center]Taking the shock out of electrical appliances and other tips for the home circuit By Anis Siddiqi[/center] Shorter wires for electrical appliances are better as there is greater loss of power when the electric current has to travel a longer distance. If a person gets an electric shock, the best way to release him is to switch off the electric appliance at once. If the switch is not near, pull out the wire and disconnect it. If for some reason this is also not possible, put the main switch off to cut off the current. When using an electric kettle always switch it off before pouring out the water to avoid getting an electric shock. When boiling milk or any other liquid on an electric stove, make sure it doesn't boil over and spill, otherwise you're liable to get a shock if you touch the stove or stir the liquid with a metal spoon. If an electric plug fits too tight and is difficult to pull out, rub the prongs with the lead of a soft pencil and see it slide in and out. The lead acts as a lubricant. Keep your refrigerator in a cool place where air can circulate all around it. Don't put it right next to the wall. Keep it away from sources of heat like stoves or sunlight. Refrigerators are made in such a way that the cool air inside circulates all around. So, always keep your flat dishes and utensils on the lowest racks so they do not impede the air flow. Never put hot foods into the refrigerator. The sudden change of temperature can spoil the food and also reduces the cooling capacity of the fridge in the long run. Always wash the ice trays with coldwater. Hot water can damage the surface and thus make cubes difficult to remove. Do not adjust the thermostat of your refrigerator too often as it may spoil the mechanism. Clean your electric toasters daily after use, otherwise breadcrumbs can get lodged in the element and cause it to spark. Always store your iron flat. If it is kept standing upright it is liable to get knocked down, which can break or damage it. The sole plate of your iron can get stained with starched clothes or after ironing over plastic buttons or any other thing. Never try to scrape off the stains with a sharp instrument. Sprinkle a damp cloth with baking soda and iron over it. The stains will come off. Scorch marks can be rubbed off with damp table salt. When using your mixers or blenders, make sure they are not filled to the top. Fill it only three-quarters of the way, otherwise it can damage the motor. Never run the mixer or blender for a long stretch of time, otherwise the motor can get too hot or even burn out. Always wait for 5 to 10 seconds after switching off before lifting the blender or grinder out of the machine. Prolong the life of your air-conditioner by covering the outside part during the winter when it's not in use. Cover it with a piece of plastic that matches the color of the house and seal it with matching tape. Always clean electric bulbs by holding them steady and cleaning them with a dry duster. Both dampness and vibration shorten the life of electric bulbs. Fly-marks can be removed with a drop of vinegar. If there is voltage fluctuation where you live, install a voltage regulator for your fridge, TV and other expensive appliances. Frequent fluctuations can damage your appliance. Keep a flashlight near the main fuse or power box so you don't have to fumble when the lights go out. Buy a neon tester and periodically check your electrical appliances.
