Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh Women are the sisters of men. Mr. M.N.Yousuf seeks a clarification concerning a Hadith I quoted often in previous articles and in answers to readers' letters. The Hadith is quoted very often by Muslim writers when they speak about the equality of men and women from the Islamic Point Of view. Mr. Yousuf wants only to know in which collection of authentic Hadiths it occurs. The Hadith states, "Women are the sisters of men." This Hadith is related by Abu Dawood and At-Tirmithi under the general heading of Taharah, or Purification, and by Ad-Darimi under the heading of Wudhu, or Ablutions, and by Ahmad in his Musnad. It is considered to be highly authentic. My reader has not asked any clarification of the meaning of the Hadith. He wants only to establish its authenticity. I may add, however, that this Hadith has a very clear significance, because the word the Prophet mentions, shaqaiq, which is the plural of shaqiq, signifies total equality. In fact, it puts men and women on the same footing with regard to their position in God's sight. Hence, we should always maintain this concept and seek to drive it home in all Muslim communities, particularly those where women are treated as subordinate to men. In Islam, a woman is answerable for her own actions. She has complete independence with regard to her property, her position in society, and her religious responsibilities. If that is not equality, what is? Adil Salahi in Islam in Perspective of Arab News - 10 August 1998 Wassalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh Haniff (with 2 f's) |
