| Salaam I have a question about dogs. What is the exact information about dogs? Are they only for work purposes? etc... I found an interesting website (throught PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals http://www.peta.com in the "action" section) that showed evidence that in Korea, China, and a few other countries that they make coats (Yes, coats) out of dogs and cats, and that the skin of these animals is used as well. These organizations were able to pass the "fur" and "skin" off by using a fancy name. Several stores in the USA (TJ MAXX, and various fancy stores) have even carried these products, unknowingly. If dogs are haram(?) then is it haram to help them? Does that make sense? I know that in different countries people do things differently, what my sound "strange" to someone may be perfectly "normal" to someone else. I am not trying to offend anyone by my message. If I have, please accept my heart felt apology. Salaam Curious Sister [hr] Salaam sis, the dog is haram for us to eat! his saliva/moisture from his mouth are aslo considered dirty and hence when 'licked' by a dog you need to perform ghusl or change your clothes if they be the item that the dog licked! However if the dog brushes past you, as far as my memory recollects, there is no need for the above mentoined steps to be taken. It is not haraam for you to protect the dog, infact it is a duty upon every muslim to treat the cretures of Allah with respect and to give them their just rights as Allah has imparted them! If you see an animal that needs your help, provide it! regardless of whether it is haraam or not to eat!!! However be careful in trying to help animals such as Lions, monkeys, DONKEYS (..heheh) they can be dificul to help, believe me!..:) Oh and do not put your self in unnecessary danger either! In support of this argument, please refer to the story of the whore and the dog as narrated in any good muslim story book, I believe it is based upon an authentic hadith but could be wrong. As far as being able to use their skin for clothing I am not at all sure. I, from a personal point of view would not wear dogs leather, simply because the quality is not all that great!..:)) Now I have seen skin from snakes and alligators and even Lions being used around the muslim world. they are also haraam animals but their skins are treated and then used hence I do not see why dogs cant be used in the same way! personally speaking I think that using animals just for the sake of their skin is morally questionable! However I am aware of cultures that use them for food as well and hence if as a by product of this action they utilise the skins, I see no wrong in this. they have a right to practice their beliefs even if we do not agree with them! So you can possibly campaign to stop such activities in your local community/ country but I would be very careful before telling someone else that their beliefs are questionable! So help animals whereever you can but be very very careful in the process..ok?..:) Allah Hafiz Conscience [hr] Asalaam alaikum wrt wb, Below is the answer to the question about Dogs from Sheikh Munajidd: According to Islaamic Sharee?ah, it is not permitted to keep a dog except within narrowly-defined limits, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained: "Whoever keeps a dog, his good deeds will decrease every day by one qeeraat (a unit of measurement), unless it is a dog for farming or herding." According to another report: ". . . unless it is a dog for herding sheep, farming or hunting." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 2322) Dogs are extremely naajis (impure, unclean). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "If a dog drinks from the vessel of any one of you, let him wash it seven times" (reported by Muslim, no. 279). According to another report: ". . . and clean it the eighth time with earth." (Saheeh Muslim, no. 280). It is forbidden in Islaam to sell a dog and to receive payment for it, as is reported in Saheeh al-Bukhaari from Abu Mas?oud al-Ansaari: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade (accepting) the price of a dog. (al-Fath, no. 2237) The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us not to resemble dogs by placing our forearms on the ground during sujood (prostration), as in reported in the hadeeth narrated by Anas ibn Maalik, according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Do sujood properly; none of you should spread his forearms like a dog does." (al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 822). Whoever keeps a dog in his house is denied the blessing of the angels? presence in his house, as the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 3225). Keeping dogs nowadays is the habit of the kuffaar, who adopt them as friends, kiss them, let them lick them and their clothes, sleep with them and even leave them money in their wills. Keeping a dog is an imitation of the kuffaar. Some Muslims may claim that they need to keep a dog at home for purposes of protection, to which we respond that nowadays there are burglar alarm systems and other measures one may take for security purposes, and there is no need to keep a dog, praise be to Allaah. It only remains for us to say that the fact that it is forbidden to keep a dog and interect closely with it does not mean that we should not be kind or feel compassion towards dogs if we see them in a pitiful state. These are two entirely separate matters. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us that "a man saw a dog biting the dust because of thirst, so he took his shoe and started to scoop water up with it until the dog?s thirst was quenched. Allaah appreciated his good deed and granted him entry to Paradise for it." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 174). According to another report, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whilst a man was walking he became very thirsty, so he went down to a well and drank from it. When he came out, he saw a dog panting and biting the soil because of thirst. The man said, ?He is suffering the same as I suffered,? so he filled his shoe (with water), came out and let the dog drink until his thirst was quenched. Allaah appreciated his good deed and forgave him because of it." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allaah, will we be rewarded for how we treat animals?" He said, "In every living thing there is a reward." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath, no. 2363). We do not want to omit reminding you of the importance of reading the Qur?aan properly and referring to it. You say in your question that the story of the thirsty dog is in the Qur?aan, and that is not the case, as it is reported in the Sunnah. And Allaah knows best. Because Angels won't enter those houses in which two things r there. 1.Pictures of idols 2.Where dogs live. This is hadees part. Now coming to the logical point Dogs do not have sweating glands, they sweat thru their toungues, by nature they have the habit of licking, which is not good for our health. Now there is one more hadees,which is as follows Once our prophet(pbuh) was walking along with his companions he noticed a dead goat, Prophet(pbuh) asked y this can't be used the companions answered Oh prophet(pbuh) dead animals meat is haram to us according to quran and u r telling to use it. Prophet(pbuh)answered meat is haram not the Skin. Now the conclusion is the skin of any animal is halal for us. Again if somebody asks whether the skin of Pig is halal, for them my answer is YES if u can remove pigs skin. For ur kind information Pigs skin cannot be removed. Referring to the following verse in the Qur'an, There is not an animal on the earth, nor a bird flying upon two wings, but comprise nations like yourselves (6:38) the prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If dogs were not a nation (ummah) among nations, I would have ordered that they be killed" [reported by Abu Daoud and al-Tirmidhi. This was said by the Prophet following Jibril's remark that angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog. Trans.] The Prophet (peace be upon him) told his Companions a story concerning a man who found a dog in the desert panting and licking the dust due to thirst. The man went to a well, filled his shoes with water, and relieved the dog's thirst. Said the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), "Allah appreciated this and forgave him all his sins" [reported by al-Bukhari] from page 120 of 'The Lawful & The Prohibited in Islam' translated by Kamal El-Helbawy, Moinuddin Siddiqui and Syed Shukry, Kuwait, 1414/1993. |
