Salaam alaikum dear Sisters and Brothers in Islam.

After lurking in here for a few weeks, I've decided to introduce myself...

My name is Shahida and I am at Medical School in South Africa.  I don't have much time at the computer, but this is DEFINITELY one of my favourite places to visit.

I look forward to posting, inshaAllah, and getting to know you all better.

*Before anyone asks, yes, my name is pronounced Shaheeeeeeda, as in female martyr in Arabic*

Take care, Allah ma3akum
Salaam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

Assalamu Alaikum,

Welcome aboard sister. We hope to benefit from u and so will u from the board, InshaAllah.
So, we have another 'to-be-tabeeb':) on the board, MAshaAllah. They must be following the British system there, right? So, I guess, its a five year course...... and what's the title of degree/diploma that they award u at the end of medical course, M.B.,B.S/ M.D or something else?

Wassalam.

Nope, this "system" is definitely uniquely South African!  We have to study for 6 years, then do 1 year internship, and after that 1 year "community service", in order to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.  When we're done with the 6 years (3 to go for me) we graduate with an "MB BCh"...the Latin equivalent of MB BS I suppose...

There are days I wish I had gone to Germany to do my training, because they also only study for 5 years.  But I think of the practical experience I will get here, and it makes up for the time!

Salaam now, and thanks for the warm welcome

Welcome Shahida!

Yay! another medical student :) I'm starting my 2nd year of medical school (Friday's our first day!) which means i have 3 more to go including this year. oh, i go to school in the US. That's cool that you have to do community service too- what types of things do you do?  This year will be more book work for us, but 2 days of the week we're in the hospitals, and then we're there the whole time for the last 2 years. Do you know what field you'd like to go into?

Salaam alaikum everyone!

Thanks again for all the welcomes:)

Well, I guess this medical programme really is different to others around the world...we go to medical school to become "general practitioners".  If you wanna become an oncologist/paediatrician etc, you spend another 3 or 5 or more years (depending on the field) to specialise.  I haven't made up my mind about a specific field yet.  Still trying to make it to be a GP!

Well, starting in January, inshaAllah, I will start my first clinical year.  Until now I have not had contact with any patients.  Our first 3 years are pure theory!

Gotta go...will post again later, inshaAllah.

Allah ma3akum
Salaam

Assalamu Alaikum,

Its amazing that they dont follow the British system there, rather, have their own unique South African system. Good for them:).
I did my MBBS from Pakistan. They follow the British system there. MBBS stands for 'Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery'. Its a 5 year program plus 1 year of internship. I wonder what does the 'Ch' in MBBCh stand for? And we also become GPs (General Practitioners) after completing our diploma. For specialization, we also need to study further,  period depends upon the field one chooses. So, basically the system is pretty much similar except for the length of course, its 6 years there.
So, u must be done with ur Anatomy, Physiology, biochemistry......... and what else! I guess Pathology, Pharmacology also!

Wassalam.

hehe, you wouldn't be able to read anything, lol, I can't spell to save my life!!...but I know some stuff, like "kaise ho?" (my version of asking how r u?...or something like that?? the answer to which i usually say:"alhamdulillah, theek hon"? he? ) I always get the genders wrong!! so they end up laughing a LOT!!  He is always talking about "taqdeer"(qadr) and "zindigee"(life?)...takes me a while to understand sometimes, lol.

Actually a while ago, the one doc asked if I had ever watched a Hindi movie...I watched the first one without subtitles, man, was I confused!! But then came along "kuch kuch hota hain" WITH subtitles, and I rather enjoyed it.  Haven't watched any of those Bollywood hits since though...although I have learned some of the language.

I will have to spend some more time with some Pakistani sisters in order to really GET the language.  But reading isn't that bad either, it seems really close to arabic, with a few exceptions...

Salaam now

Salaam

Forgot the "achaa??"(this always gets me smiling, like REALLY???)

"bhetti"(NOT his daughter, but I threatened to start calling him "uncle" hehehe)

"bhaji"? meaning like aunty?

"ben and bhai" the little girl who used to live across the road from me would always say "my bhai this, my bhai that.." In the beginning I thought she was saying "my BOY"...hehehe, her mom laughed at THAT one!

Can't think of so much today...just got my Pharmacology on my mind. That test is on Friday, please all make Duaa for me?

Salam

Shahida, that would be "beti".
"bhaji"? meaning like aunty?
it's "baji"...used for elder sister. Other terms used are aapa, aapi, didi, behna, etc.
"ben and bhai"
That would be "behen and bhai". :)
