Israeli army captain jailed for refusing to serve in occupied territories

JERUSALEM, Aug 21 (AFP) - An Israeli army captain was jailed for 28 days for refusing to serve in the West Bank, a group campaigning for the soldier said Tuesday.

Reservist Captain Dan Tamir, 26, was put behind bars Monday for failing to take part in what he called an Israeli campaign of repression in the occupied territories.

"As a man who believes in democracy and Jewish values, and is troubled at the future of the state and its character, I will take no further part in armed actions which aim to perpetuate the Israeli occupation," the Yesh Gvul group quoted him saying at his trial.

Yesh Gvul, which means "There is a Limit", was created during the Israeli war against Lebanon in 1982 and aims to highlight the issues of conscience experienced by soldiers in Israel's mainly conscript army.

Tamir is the 19th Israeli soldier jailed since the beginning of the current intifada, or Palestinian uprising, on September 28.

Too bad this didn't make the headline news of major newspapers, otherwise it would open the eyes of people to the reality of what is going on.
