Embedded C  or C++/unix  job??

Assalamo elikuim
Alhamdullah I have two job offers and I have to decide by next week.

The thing is I cant decide which one is better. I am a programmer at
heart and love C.

One company which does embedded programming is willing to train me in
embeddded programming (I have no experience of it). Although it doesnt
matter but environment is very hard ware factory sort of. It is little
far away from where i live.

Other company is doing c++/Solaris application programmig - of which I
have some experience. The atmosphere is pretty trendy and has lots of
facilities at the work place. Also this job requires lot of interacting
with the user (they are OK with hijab and no hand shaking etc. etc).
ALso have to be on call (work from home) every seventh weekend. It is
comparatively closer to where I live.

What is the scope of embedded programming? How different/difficuilt  is
it from application programming? I am afarid that what if I couldnt get
embedded prog(will be fired in no time since so many other qualified
people are out there).
I have done istikhara but couldnt decide

Any advice woudl be really apreciated.
JazakAllah khair

I would say get into embedded programming, I've been doing that and when the place I was working for shutdown, I didn't have a problem finding a job, whereas my co-workers who only did windows or mac programming had/are having a hard time finding a job.  They both are programming, only thing is with embedded systems is that you don't use a windows OS (unless you are developing some device making use of windows CE).  But typically the OS is pretty sophisticated, and there can be good tools out there.  I used to do printer development, we had are own OS and some great debugging tools.  Yes, its a joint effort with the hardware group, because the hardware has to work for you to debug.

The current project I'm working on, we 1st are developing the whole thing in windows and then will port it over to a system using VXWORKS (a very powerful OS and fast becoming an industry standard.  The OS itself is like $30,000 per development seat).

Hope that helps. :)

Good points Arshad..

I think when approaching a job especially if you are a sister which i think anonymous seems to be? you should make sure to take into account the environment as well. An atmosphere with mostly guys (which is mostly all computer related stuff) is hard to work in... so are hardcore anti-islamic/ignorant/ zenophobic co-workers...commute time something you mentioned is probably something else you should take into account for your quality of life...i think while development of skills and things are important..atmosphere and being comfortable should be equally if not more impt...

Good points from Jannah.  As far as the work is concerned, get into embedded stuff, there's gonna be big demand for many years to come.
