Boards:

Chopping boards and pastry boards should be scrubbed clean in running water as soon as they have been used. They are much easier to clean at this stage.

Floury boards and rolling pins clean up much faster with cold water. Hot water cooks the flour and makes it cling. The way to get stained boards clean is to scrub them with salt water and lemon juice and put the board in the sunlight to whiten.

Wallpapered surfaces:

Clean wallpaper with bread - yes, bread. Nothing else has just the right amount of moisture without a trace of wetness to damage the paper. Bread will take marks off which nothing else will. The easiest way to use it is to slice all the crusts from a loaf and work with these.

To remove grease marks from wallpaper, put blotting paper over it and then apply a hot iron.

Reviving antique furniture:

To revive antique furniture which has lost its sheen and has patches with black greasy-looking deposits, make a mixture with 2 parts turpentine, 2 parts methylated spirits, 2 parts vinegar, and 1 part raw linseed oil. Put all these ingredients together in a bottle and shake it well.

Put a little on a cotton wool ball and work first on a test patch somewhere unnoticeable. If the piece has been finished with shellac or French polish, a shine will gradually show through. If this happens, the mixture can safely be used. If no shine appears the piece is only beeswax. In that case it is safer to give it to an expert to revive.

Leather:

Grease is the worst stain you can have on leather and speed is the first essential. Cover the mark immediately with fullers' earth or talcum powder and leave it on the mark for a day or two. This will absorb some, if not all, of the grease. Clean leather, other than suede, with saddle soap.

Dye running:

To prevent fabrics with running dyes from fading seriously, soak them in salt water, using a tablespoon of salt to each pint (500 ml). This will make the dye fast enough to prevent serious fading.

Screw tops:

There are four ways of undoing a really stiff screw top. Which works best for a particular top is a matter of trial and error.

1. The easiest is to put a wide elastic band round the rim of the top. The rubber gives such a good grip it seems to release muscle power for twisting.

2. Break the airlock, either by tapping the rim sharply all round its edge with the back of a knife or by giving the top of the lid a few hefty thwacks with the heel of a shoe.

3. Run it under a very hot tap.

4. If all else fails, pierce a hole in the top.

Handle on brooms:

The best way to put a new handle on a broom is to hammer the end hard until it is just small enough to squeeze into the socket. Once in, it will gradually swell back to shape, especially if you wet it and make a really tight fit.

China packing:

When china has to travel a long distance, the safest way to pack it is to wrap it carefully in strips or sheets of very damp paper, covering each part with several layers. The paper will tighten and stiffen as it dries and make a firm protective layer. The same method should be used for glass.

Madina Board does not seem to recognise a 'dash'. This happened to me earlier, too. I have now modified the message and used a 'hyphen' instead.

Eat the loaves and spare the crusts :)
