cruisin'....

Actual things my mom said when she took me driving today (to practice for my license):

<after saying that I must be giving her a heart attack>
"No bhetti.. I'm not afraid of dying anyway."

"the brake!!!! Ya Allah, don't forget the brake!!!!!!!!!"

"Go in the right lane.  That way you won't kill as many people."

"Slowly.. go slowly.. sloowwlly." <five minutes later> "do you know what slow means?"

"Your turns have to be sharp like marbles." <Huh?  You mean like on a dime?>  "Right - marble, dime, same thing -- just turn before you hit the curb!" (then I hit the curb)

Hahah, it was fun :)

Does anyone have any driving stories? :)

When my brother took his driving test the instructor took him onto a dual-carriageway on which the speed limit is 50mph. My cautions brother was doing only 25 mph, and so the instructor yells at him "bloody hell! get a move on!" hehehe... but he still passed alhumdulillah.

hmm..driving stories..where do I begin?

well there was this one time when I was in the car with no one except my best friend who couldn't drive. I was 17 at the time and had just gotten my first license. (in Ireland you can get a provisional license to "learn" as long as there is a fully qualified driver with you at all times ). So we were thinking we were so cool, cruisin' around and then we got to a hill with a traffic light at the top. The light was red so I stopped and was the first in the line of traffic. When the light turned green do you think I could get the car to go forwards and not backwards? Not a chance. So there I was with about 5 or 6 cars behind me and I couldn't get the car going. I was nearly crying and my friend suggested she run up the road to my house and get my sister. Just as the light turned red I slammed my foot on the gas and made it out. All the other cars had to wait for the next green.
But no one blew the horn at me. It must have had something to do with the big red L on the back of the car.

anyway..more to come

Alhamdulillah I'm a good driver by now. I got my license here in Germany where no one is allowed to drive unless you've gone to driving school and spent a fortune.

Those were hillarious Se7en.  So are you going to get that Ford Pinto? :)

I don't really have any bad driving stories on my part but I have seen quite a bit, accidents that have happened before my eyes.

Like this one guy on a motorcyle was going down the street and this car pulled up out of the driveway and hit him right in front of me, the dude went spinning in the air and landed on his back.

Another time I saw this guy in a ford mustang hit this mini-van and all this debris went flying all over the place.

Actually there's a lot of accidents that I have seen and wont list them out, but there is something that I have observed from all these accidents and that is, usually the person wasn't paying attention.

Driving is a very serious thing, and one needs to concentrate fully at all times.  When one gets inside that car, one needs to put aside any problems in life and concentrate fully on the driving.  The only accident I was involved in was when an 18 year old hit me at 50mph and it was because i could see he was talking to his friend in the rear view mirror and not paying attention to the road.  Another accident I saw was in stop and go traffic, the person driving was looking elsewhere and hit the car infront of him.  If these people had been concentrating they could have avoided these accidents.

"Red means stop."

"What state did you get your licence in?"

"Can I drive?  Please?"

salaamz.
LOL...se7en..happens to the best of people :D

anywayz, this has got nothin to do with the topic..well kinda..but i just thought i'd post it here..:)

so i awoke at 3am one morning to hear my parents frantically asking someone if they were *sure* they were awake...i listened some more and realised my parents were on the phone to my older brother (yes, at 3am). After that i couldn't be botherd to hear more so i went back to sleep.
the next morning i found out that my bro woke up at about 2:30ish (am!!), put his moble (thats cell phone to u americans :) ) in his pocket...walked downstairs..got the car keys..walked outta the house, barefoot, to my dad's car...and drove to the shopping mall.now all this time he was asleep!! when he got to the mall he just sat there in the car...my parents must've heard the door bang or something cuz they soon realised my brother had gone somewhere..thet phoned him and tried to wake him up...*finally* he awoke and drove back home!!
Subhanallah....I thank Allah he hadn't killed himself while he was 'sleep-driving'!!
lol...take care ppl... :)

Yikes sleep driving? I've never heard of that before. I started taking driving lessons when I was 17. In fact my sister were taking it at the same time. I remember the first time I was driving i got SO dizzy. I wanted to stop half away through driving but the instructor said no keep going.

For 2 years I would refuse to drive on the highway, it was the scariest thing to me.

Heh now alhamdulilah I LOVE the highway, well not when it is bumper to bumper.

Bhaloo, highway 5 down here sucks during rush hour :(

Just make sure you are driving a good beginners car, something like a corolla or the like, I started driving my parents 4X4 which was not good. Depending on the 4X4 it could be like driving a truck, but even if it isn't, driving a regular car is a whole lot better.

This was the funniest quote "Go in the right lane.  That way you won't kill as many people." Hahaha :)

Good luck and remember to always say duah al rukoob, the duah of riding/driving (camels and horses back then but still very applicable now) before driving.

Doctor, can you give us the words of that dua? I always just say "bismillah" when starting out but a little dua would be nice.

Alhamdulillah in almost four years of driving here in Germany I've never been in an accident. I think the 786 on the number plate might have something to do with it.

Bismillah and salam,

Here is nice dua to say when you get in the car:

Bismillah allathi la yadhurru ma3a ismihi shay'in fil ardhi wala fissama' (my translation: in the name of Allah along which nothing in the earth and skies can cause harm)

A3oothu bi kalimati Allah attamat min shar ma khalaq (i seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil that He has created)

(in the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has places this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. All praise is for Allah (3 times) Allah is the greates (3 times) How perfect you are, oh Allah, verily i have wronged my soul, so forgive me, for surely none can forgive sins except for You)

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah :)

This is the dua I know for when getting into your car (I believe it's also in the Qur'an)

Subhan al lathee sakhra lanna hatha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunn qaliboon.

Glory be to Him who has subjected this (means of transport) to our use, for we would never have been able to accomplish this ourselves. And to our Lord surely we must turn back.

wasalaamu alaykum :)
