Hi all,

Does anyone have any info, either "official" or personal, about the rate of eating disorders in the Muslim community?

Thanks!

slm sparrow,

in my opinion i think it's the same as the general population which means we do have cases but i'm worried that it's sharply increasing b/c of a number of factors

A few years ago i saw a program on BBC2 about the astronomical rate of heart disease amongst desis in Britain. They attributed it to the lack of exercise.. but more fundamentally to their diet. I mean if you're having a curry everynight, you're having a meal that is cooked in lots of oil and obviously it will affect your health.

Also, mithai contains an unbelievable amount of calories in it. I think they said something like one slice of white barfi contains as much calories as you need for the whole day (or perhaps half a day?) and you've seen desis on Eid day... they'll probably have two pieces of mithai in one sitting.

PS desis = people from the indo-pak subcontinent

right on about the paan jannah. One of my friends who is a trainee dentist and he was telling me that the mouth cancer rate amongst elder Bengalis is hideously large because of the huge amounts of paan they chew, etc.

I feel eating disorders among muslim community must be the highest(atleast in India). I have never seen a muslim here having a balanced diet. I remember there is a hadith which says, one-third of your stomach should be filled with food, one-third with water and the rest with air. I wonder how many muslims implement this. Astagfirullah.

I have lived in 3 different cities in the past 6 years. And everywhere the muslim locality has the maximum number of hotels. Not to mention the road side stalls offering kababs, sheeks....sweets like jilebi, cham-cham, ras-malai...and chinese foods. And most of such places are always crowded.

Having curry everynight ?.....mannn....we have curry three times a day ;-D. And not to mention the mithai's along with meal.

Very true about paan, zarda, etc. Muslims also consume it so much...along with bengalis and marwadis.
What's paan?
A Paan is a leaf from a creeper called the Paan creepers. There are different types of Paan creepers. These different types of Paan leaves are made into many different varieties of Paan by adding various different ingredients and then folding into triangular shaped Bidas. [taken from www.paan.com :) ]

Sparrow, now you can imagine the rate of eating disorders among muslims ..........

wassalam

eating disorders, intersting subject, i could talk about that forever!!

I think in third world coutries ppl dont diet, but starve as they dont have food.  But places like the uk, we dont appreciate wat we have and therefore many girls, occasionally boys, diet to have the figure the media show 2 b glamourous.

I dont wanna sound stupid or anything, but from where i'm from, all the women are fat, so i doubt we have eating disorders!

Dont know about other places.

But some sisters really do go overboard with the chicken wings and kebabs!

Thanks for all the replies.  Just want to say one thing in response to:

"I dont wanna sound stupid or anything, but from where i'm from, all the women are fat, so i doubt we have eating disorders!"

Weight is not an indication of whether one has an ED or not.  Bulimics, for example, tend to be of normal - heavy weight.  :)

Okay, I just have to say that Bulimia is not a "guilt" disorder or a form of paranoia!  And it actually has very little to do with vanity about one's weight along the lines of  "Honey do I look fat in this dress?" or having a 7 chicken wings when you should have stopped at 4.

I asked because I've struggled with an ED (not bulimia) and was simply curious as to its prevelance (or not) within Islam.  Obviously the reasons for its onset differ from person to person but in general it has to do with issues of control, self-loathing, fear, etc. Because in Western society so much of a person's (social) worth is determined by her appearance, a lot of women fall into EDs when trying to escape from the above mentioned negative feelings. So I just started wondering if it is the same within the Islamic communtiy, wherein women apparently find their worth from things other than appearance. I wondered if the women in this community struggling with the same feelings of anxiety, loneliness etc., fall into a self-destructive  ED pattern as easily as Western women seem to.  Studies have shown that when American cultural imperialism marches across borders it brings with it a bumped up rate of EDs.  For example, country A may have  virtually no ED rates.  Then in comes a tide of American shows, movies etc.  EDs begin to be seen in the young women of that country. Scary.

Like I said, just curious.

sparrow...
i think ur right... you know i don't know of a single case of that overseas. i think that they are pretty isolated from the rest of the world and starving yourself etc to look good is an alien concept to them. but i do know of striking cases of anorexia among american muslim teen girls.

and again eating disorders are not just about 'eating' they are truly mental diseases.. worse than addictions...

I am finding this thread interesting. I am a big big woman. It has never been a problem for me- mentally.

I have even had my "fat" talk with perspective husbands- this is how I am- been this way all of my life- don't marry me if it is a problem with you!

Some brothers had  "the look"- and ran so fast the only glimpse I got- was their shadow...

On the flip side- perhaps it is the Muslim neighborhood. All my life no one ever said anything about my weight to me, yet when ever I am in a women's gathering many Muslims feel impelled to tell me about my weight.

It is very reaccuring thing. Until this year, when I saw them decend on a young muslima. Something snapped inside of me. I watched the poor teenager- who was indeed over weight- cringe and want to get away.

Since then I have made it very clear when they begin- that they are being rude and mean.

In America it seems as if it is teens who bust fat teens.
But in my Muslim world it is the older foreign woman  who are causing problems.

Kathy, I think that's great.  More power to you. I have a number of female friends who are big and they have no issue with it either. The crazy thing is, as far as I'm concerned, is that intellectually I know that I have never been big.  But about a year ago I lost a considerable amount of weight without intending to and the reaction I got from people was UNREAL.  It was as if I had been obese and had lost 100s of pounds worth of  weight. "Oh my GOD! You look great!" was all I heard until finally I asked my sis and my best friend "Was I really really big before and didn't realize it?"  All of sudden my worth as a human being (and a female) climbed because I was thin. I think because I was in an vulnerable spot emotionally I took these reactions to heart and spiraled into an ED.  Ugh.
