looks like it's England v's Republic of Ireland in the World Cup Final.  If the Germans go out, if the Dutch go out .. we beat Italy in '94 so we only have to worry about Brazil really and you lot can play them in the semi-finals okay?

(yeah, dream on)

I think England are gonna be champions of the World. At last a sport topic where we can talk rather than discussing about Netball(Basketball) or padded rugby.
Go on England, go on England, go on England.
England 2 Albania 0

R u watching Germany :)

LOL! The Germans are *so* sickened. It's great gas though. They were so snobby about their football skills for years. As soon as Bertie Vogts left they went dooowwwn. Rudi Völler?? ha ha. He's about as good for them as Kevin Keegan was for England.
Mind you, ex-players can be good managers/trainers. Look what Mick McCarthy has done with the Irish. It really looks like we're going to qualify this time. Japan/Korea here we come...Ole Ole Ole Ole

What was life like back then ???  I wasn't born yet.  You guys didn't have the internet back then right? ;) hehehehe, just teasing.

The Germans always have a good team, that Voller guy is something else, and who was their midfielder, Bahnhoff? ???  There was a Bayern also.  The bad thing about "football" is that the referee has too much of an impact in the game.  One red card, or penalty in the goalie box and that's the game.

Let me get this straight, you guys thing the Brits can qualify this year?

let me correct "the Germans always HAD a good team".

You're right, Rudi Völler could play, like Klinsmann, Hässler, Matteus etc. But now they are all ooooold and the fact that Völler was a good player doesn't mean he's a good manager.

Another thing to get straight - I am *not* supporting the germans but in my country we have a long history of supporting whoever England is playing against, no matter who that is ;-D
I hope the Germans don't qualify .. just to wake them up somewhat.

I hope the IRISH DOOOO qualify..that would be great! Never forget Euro '88, where Ireland beat England 1-0 in Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart, (Goal courtesy of Ray Houghton). AAaaah..I drive by that Stadium every day and remember fondly. It's also a landmark for any visitors from Ireland which I point out with great joy.

I remember the words of a song we had for Italia '90 - "Packie Bonner, he's a gonner, he won't have a single thing to do..take up knitting, Packie Bonner, Lineker can do that too" For anyone who doesn't know, Bonner was our goalie at the time.

that would be Oliver Bierhoff. Bahnhof means railway station, although weird names never stopped the Germans before...I know some REALLY weird names..but that's another thread

Dismal play for 90 minutes, last minute goal to give us the result we needed.  Hardly a surprise, when we're playing at Old Trafford with a squad full of Man U and ex-Man U players!!!!!!

But who cares, we're off to Japan and Korea next year!!!!!

Sr Eleanor, was German TV full of images of the "lap of honour"?  Man, I would love to have seen Rudi Voller's face when he heard the England score!!
