slm,

I like the Shukr'Allah song and a bunch of others, but I don't know their names because the CDs they sold didn't have covers or the names of the songs or anything! :) S'all good though. The Ramadan song and track 8 were really good too!

But my fav tape is still the Inner Struggle!

May Allah (SWT) bless all the brothers and sisters who work hard to make these tapes! And may the youth and not-so-youth alike gain something beneficial from the hard work of these dedicated individuals. Ameen!

Aiight, take care,

errr.. we do? ???

yeah i liked the new album.. i bought it after hearing the brothers performing in the bazaar at the al safa/astrolabe entertainment booth :) of course it has the long awaited ramadan song on it, as well as a few others that have meaningful lyrics to em. one that particularly caught my attention was 'i dont need to get high'... haha i was crackin up when i first heard it.. but its good they made a song about that because drug use is more widespread among muslim youth than most may think :(

overall i'd give it 4 stars :) i hope the final release is even better inshallah :)

I just bought the Next Level and The Straight Track while in Baltimore.

Imagine the look on my husband's face when he came home last night -

to find his wife and son bee-bopping to Rap Music!

(I realize there is a generational gap - what is the correct "hip term" to uses for dancing to rap?)

Assalamu Alaikum,

As our major annual event is approaching, I thought it will be good idea to post this message as an important reminder for all of us.

1. MYD shold not become just another routine annual event for us. This is a wonderful oppurtunity to make serious Dawah effort. So please make consious dawah efforts and use every minute of the day to utilize for the purpose.

2. Be active all day and try to serve as many Muslims as possible. We are there to serve those who serve Allah and these Muslims are gathering for "Muslim Youth Day" not for any other "independence day" etc.

3. All sucess/hamd belongs to Allah (swt), so be humble and remember that we must be always thankful to Allah(swt) who has provided us this oppurtunity to serve the community.

4. On my personal request, please pray as much as possible for the safe and sound event. Especial nawafil and Qiyamul Lail may be observed during these period. We must ask help from Allah (swt) beacuse all of these efforts are only and only to please Him.

May Allah (swt) help us all.

Wassalam,

Your brother in Islam,

*ouch*  Why you gotta strike below the belt like that??  Actually I had picked up on the fact that you weren't a MYNA raps fan.. Its ok, I know a lot of guys who aren't.  My own brother used to make so much fun of me about it!  To this day, I don't think he knows his own brother-in-law to-be sings on a couple of the tapes.  And if he does, he keeps quiet about it :)

I think those brothers have maad talent yo.  Even if you don't like the rhythm, you have to appreciate at the lyrical quality and the composition.  I'm thinking it ain't all that easy.

The most amazing thing about the MYNA Raps songs (for me at least) are the lyrics of the songs.  I thought different songs were written by different people, but then someone told me that most songs are written by Naeem and/or Abdul Malik.  If that's true, then those brothers are really talented in writing songs masha Allah.

Just look at "Worldy Satisfaction", for example.  The rhyme pattern in that whole song is amazing!  "Wings of the Deen" is like a 30-minute lecture beautifully condensed into a 3 minute song.  "Unknown Future" contains a deep message.  The "Soldiers" song is so mysterious, I still haven't figured it out :)  Some of the non-instrumental chants are also wonderfully done.  "Astaghfirullah wa natoobu ilayk"** is one of my favorites.  I could go on and on ... but I'll stop now :)

Wassalamu alaikum.

** Technically, it should be "(n)astaghfirullah wa (n)atoobu ilayh" ... but it's all good!

Re: MYNA Raps 5...
Arsalan

[slm]

Usually it's considered odd (especially in the Arabic language) to switch between third person and second person in the same sentence.  So if the first part of the statement says "I seek forgiveness of Allah" then the latter part should say "repent to Him."  However, if the first part said "I seek forgiveness of You O Allah!" (Allahumma astaghfiruka) then the latter part could be "repent to You."

Similarly, switching between collective and individual forms of first person is also considered odd.  If "all of us" are seeking Allah's forgiveness, then "all of us" need to repent also!  Either that or "I" seek His forgiveness and "I" repent to Him solely.

Like I said, it's a technicality.  I don't want to dwell on it too much.  And talking about Arabic grammar at midnight makes my head hurt too much!

slm,

My favorite "chant" is the one on side B of the Inner Struggle-- Allah Allah.

It gives me chills! Subhan'Allah, its beautiful.

One year at MYNA entertainment night at ISNA (back in the day--1995 I think) they actually performed one of these chants live.  It was awesome!!  It was from the Straight Track---"Bismillah Allahu Akbar Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alameen"

Wow...that was the year I fell in love with MYNA raps (so see! it wasn't what you guys were thinking! :))

Oh, and if you ever go back to your "home countries", take the tape with you and tell your cousins you know the people on it.  They get mad impressed! :)  Se7en, if you take it back and tell them that you're actually *on* it...wow :o you would be the coolest thing ever! :)

I am still trying to figure out a lot of the words.... they should have the lyrics written on the inside cover!

The first "raps" really got on my nerves- but I listned to them a couple more times while driving- and they kind of grow on you.

Yet- I watched my son absorb the songs and he has already got his favorite- to me this is most important.

I don't think I would recomend the tapes to my friends- as we are more the Barry Manilow type groupies.

On the other hand it will be my little secret with my Madina family- that I find them pretty "hip=hop"

That's true masha'Allah. I first heard myna raps back in Egypt 4 years ago and it immediately struck a cord in me.Subhan'Allah. My all time favourite is the 'Unknown Future'.That song has become my personal anthem.

You know abdul malik came to Egypt that year and he's said to have composed 'Praise Allah' ,which is my second favourite song :),while he was in Cairo. I didn't get to meet him though :( He left a couple of months before i met some of the most amazing brothers and sisters who were year abroad students at my university.

I pray that Allah(swt) rewards those who inspire us and remind us of our goal in this life.Ameen

i tell you..those PJNY sisters were simply out of this world. I never thought that sisters can rap like that.Wooooooooooooow!!!

And what about the sister who did the song, which she composed, about the tragidies occuring in the muslim world? talk about a heart wrenching song! and those pictures they showed made it even more painfull. If that didn't prompt us to do something to alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters in the world then i don't know what will.

BTW can anyone get the lyrics for that song? i'm sure everyone will benefit from such a reminder even if it can never compare to the live experience.

Back in my pre-Islamic days I used to love driving down the highway, hair blowing in the wind playing songs like " Born to Be Wild"

Now I am doing the same thing- except-
My son is with me,
The scarf is blowing in the wind,
and I am playing MYNA's "I only Fear Allah"

I am really enjoying this song as I venture back into the real world- a lot more tense than I ever was. May Allah swt reward those who have produce songs like these.

Maan you guys brought back so many memories for me I had to register just to post something here!  I also remembered that I had to go and buy "The Inner Struggle" because I never actually had it, I only heard it when I went driving in the car with Amina Chaudry when I lived in DC.  The first time I ever heard it was when she drove me from her house to Georgetown on the day I moved in there :)

It's nice to see you're still in the business, Naeem.  Say salaam to your wife for me, she'll remember me from when I was an ISNA intern before you guys got married.  :)  Now I'm married, I have a 2 year old, another one due in February, and I live in Oklahoma.  How is Abdul Malik?  We moved from DC in August and hadn't heard from them in a while... what about his wife, last time I saw her she was pregnant, what did they have?

Back in 1997 I went to a conference for Muslim girls in Kuwait City with Afeefa Syeed and Suhaib Barzinji and it was HILARIOUS when Afeefa turned on the MYNA raps tape and the whole of the Shari'ah council of the Kuwaiti government was sitting in the front row going "astaghfiru l-laah!  What is this?!?!"  Somebody had to explain it to them.  The girls loved it so much that they bought all the copies Suhaib had an he had to order more to have them FedExed over to Kuwait from the US because everyone wanted them!  They were amazed that people made an-nasheed in English!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!!

Shukrullah is deep.  Difficult to hear, but the lyrics are deep.

Hell Fire is another song I liked.

My favorite has to be Friends though.  I think that's one song that has to become the #1 song to be sung at youth camps/conferences during the entertainment sessions.  A lot of youth will relate to it.  Especially those whose only Islamic activity of the year is to attend the youth camps!

I Don't Need to Get High ... a song for all teens.  Muslims and non.

May Allah reward the brothers who perform in these albums, and insha Allah these songs will have a positive effect on the youth in America who are seriously in need of help with their Deen.
