FYLTP?

slm,

Ever since I got back from ISNA, I've been thinking a lot about camps and conferences I've attended in the past, and which ones were most effective, etc.  So I got to thinking, hands down, the *best* conference I *ever* attended was the FYLTP (Field Youth Leadership Training Program) held in Rockville, MD back in Aug. 1997.  It was an amazing experience, and Subhan'Allah, I was truly blessed to be a part of it.  I can honestly say that my ENTIRE life changed after that conference, for the better, Insha'Allah.

To this day--I miss it!  I miss the experience, I miss the feeling, I miss the people, I just miss it!  For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, FYLTP is a small conference focused on building leaders.  It was different from anything I had ever been to.  At the time, we participants called it Boot Camp!  We were up at the crack of dawn and if we were late for Fajr...we did pushups!  If we were late to a session---pushups! The leaders/organizers were amazing, Alhamdulillah.  Not a day went by when people didn't cry.  Every night we would have reflection, and afterwards the sisters would beg to stay up past curfew so they could read Quran together--Subhan'Allah the feeling Allah (SWT) put in our hearts that week!

The theme of the conference was Obedience.

"Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those that are in leadership amongst you."

We learned that to be leaders--we first *had* to be followers.  We had to follow Allah and His Prophet before we could expect to hold positions of leadership.  They drove this point home good..lemme tell ya.  Alhamdulillah.

Anyways, the reason I say all this is because I really think we MYNA/MSA folks should consider planning another one.  I am totally all for it!  Expecially since I'll be living in the Northeast Insha'Allah, I'll do anything I can.  But I am kind of out of the loop, so I'd like to know what measures I should take etc in setting something like this up for say next summer, Insha'Allah.

So anyone who has any info, or interest--lets get in touch!
(Se7en that means you! ;))

Take Care,
Wassalam.

Hate to break it to ya...but maybe its cos EZ is off the hook!

;-D

JK.  But I think sometimes its easier to do certain things in EZ because its smaller than CZ and WZ.  We have huge pockets of Muslims within close proximity to one another so getting together, planning and meeting isn't as hard.  I say that even though Miami is considered EZ and is over 2000 miles away from NY. But seriously, when you look at the northeast, there are thousands of Muslims dispersed throughout. Alhamdulillah.

As for us Region 7'ers(ie- southern folk), we're stuck fending for ourselves ;)

But Arsalan, I thought Texas had a ton of camps and stuff??  I would always hear about things in Austin or Houston.

I personally think this kind of camp would be great for college students as well.  I'm really hyped.

Ok, take care,

Zeyn is talking about the MSA CZ conference I think (right?)  That's not quite the same thing that Nazia talked about with the FYLTP.  That sounds like more intensive leadership training.  CZ conference is for anyone and everyone from the Central Zone, to come and listen to speakers to uplift their imaan, and to meet other people from CZ.

Sister Nazia- do you think you can post up some of your notes from the leadership camps.  I think we might all benefit greatly from it :)

Umm...I'm sorry, I went four years ago!!  I was 17, I didn't know how to take notes!  :)  Actually, I did take some notes, and infact, I just found my notebook the other day!  I'll look to see if I wrote anything useful and coherent down.  And if I did, then Insha'Allah, I'll post.  But don't get your hopes up too high, I was more of a 'listener' than a note taker. :)

But when and *if* Insha'Allah, we organize another one...you make sure you come ok?? :) Insha'Allah.  Then you won't have to rely on my sketchy shady notes.

no the camp was for both brothers and sisters..i think saleema u are thinking about YM camp around the same time (same area as well actually.) ..arsalan so far sheikh nur abdullah is confirmed and we in process of getting confirmation from imam aladeen bakri (should know by end of week from him) ..that be it as we only want 2 main speakers as we want to maximise speakers..also we should have some expreienced msa's come and help out with some workshops
