Iran police says public punishments should stop if harming Islam's image

TEHRAN, Sept 10 (AFP) - The head of the ideology department of the Iranian police, Mohammad Ali Rahmani, says the execution of Islamic punishments in public should not be carried out if they harm the image of Islam.

"If strict implementation of Islamic teachings were to undermine religion and damage its image, it must be stopped," Rahmani was quoted as saying by the English-language Iran Daily Monday.

"God does not order humans to make a hue and cry while punishing a guilty person in public. Neither did he oblige to gather people from everywhere to watch the act," the police official added.

Rahmani's comments come amid a political dispute over a fresh wave of public floggings and executions which many reformers here and moderate clerics believe is harming Iran's image on the international scene.

On Friday, deputy judiciary chief Hadi Marvi announced that only the nation's police would from now on be authorised to carry out public floggings and executions, and those just in "specific cases."

No details were given on what was meant by "specific cases."

The new regulations will end a situation in which many floggings have been carried out by non-uniformed personnel, usually Islamic militants.

Can't say i'm surprised that this is coming from a representative of a state whose religious books preach tuqiyya.
