Thing here in the east coast are at high security.  No one can believe what has happened.  The loss of life is terrible.  How could someone plan such a horrible thing.  The work of the devil.

Assalamu'alaikum,

Nevertheless, please make du'a for their families as well as those injured. May Allah give them patience and strength, and ease the rescue process. Ameen.

How is everyone doing?  Has anyone faced any hatred or religious bigotry in the last 24 hours?  I know a lot of the Islamic centers around here have received bomb threats and people calling in with abusive language.  These are all being forwarded to the FBI.  Were there any situations you were able to avoid using some common sense?

In two hours I have to go pick up my son from school. I have to walk and am not looking forward to a stroll thru my "red neck, pick-up truck" streets.

I have always been proud to be a Muslim, and greatful that I live in a country that I can express my religious choice freely. My son has begun his life knowing the same feeling.

I sit here now, contemplating my wardrobe. Should I wear my scarf in the traditional way- or should I wear it up and more like a scarf of a woman having a bad hair day.

Should I wear a  hat- like I did a long time ago- in order to be not conspicous. Should I don my jilbab- or just wear my shirt and pants...

But then - what will my son think? Will he see fear and caution. Is he ready for this information?

The world does not revolve around me and my thoughts- yet I am my son's teacher and this is his small world.

I pray to Allah swt to soften the hearts of all those who plan on evil toword the American Muslims...., for after all this is the land of the free, even for us.

Sister Kathy, are you okay? Did you have any bad experiences picking up your son? Insha Allah, I hope not. Take care in the meantime.
I heard on the news that a schoolbus full of Muslim girls was stoned in Australia. So much misdirected anger flowing around.
Watch yourselves sisters.

Thanks for asking. Al-humdulllah I am all right.

I do not expect that we will have much trouble until the weekend. It seems as if everyone is still in shock- the anger is yet to come.

My theory is that after friday and saturday nights of beer drinking the "boys" will get a riled up.

The week to follow will be the worst.

In case you are wondering about how I dressed the first day I picked up my son:

I chickened out- May Allah swt forgive me. I wore my scarf in a stylish American manner with pants and a shirt. All still Islamically correct- but not looking like a typical Muslim.

The kids in school delighted in my "new look" the girls were just tee heeing.

My son asked me why I was wearing the scarf that way. I just said I wanted to try something different. He said "Are you afraid of being Muslim?"

Those few words brought me to my knees. I refuse to be afraid of practising my great religion. I thought of all the sahabah went thru. Here I am worrying about a few red necks?

I teach my child to be proud to be Muslim. My last words to him everyday at the school door is "Remember who you are."

The next day I showed up to school looking  like a "normal" Muslim again. After all- this nation was founded on religious freedom.

So many of non-muslim women from the school have stopped by or called to see if I am OK. Insha Allah I am using these moments of contact for dawah correctly.

Masha Allah, too many people know us. The Muslim neighbor, co-worker, volunteer, friend and relative. They like us and see what true Muslims are like.

Yesterday I was talking to the crossing guard. I could see the emotional termoil he was processing as he spoke. 'Those evil Muslims' vs 'the only muslim I know- Kathy and Ali' Could she be one of them?'This is the same person who brings me desserts,  for the last three years'

Allah who Allum. May Allah swt guide these people to the truth.

Whats it like in Germany, Sis Elenor.

Tensions are running a bit high in the UK, although I guess it will be worse if a war breaks out.

Salaams for now

Mash Allah, I heard a story yesterday which hit me hard!
It was on a german chat board for Muslims. Anyway, this one person, I don't know unfortunately if it was a brother or a sister, said that they had fought with a teacher in school that day. They said that the teacher came in and wanted a minute's silence and this person said "No!". They went on to say to the class, and the teacher, that many many people die each day at the hands of terrorists and nobody cares. When kids are dying in Iraq, when women are being raped in Chechnya and Bosnia, when Israel is firing bombs on a daily basis in Palestine, **when 10 year old Muhammad was shot to death on live TV by the Israeli soldiers, as he cowered behind his father *** THEN WHO OFFERED A MINUTES SILENCE??
They went on to say that by the time they had finished speaking only 3 people out of the class still wanted the minute's silence observed.

Unfortunately not all Muslims are as confident as this one. Another boy admitted he was getting hassled in school, not by the students but by the teachers. I haven't seen any incidents, nor have I heard any anti-Islamic sentiment. But that doesn't mean it's not going on.

On the train today I was sitting beside two girls who were discussing the attacks. (what else?). One of them said her neighbours celebrated the attacks. She said she had a big screaming match with them.
Also in college today, the others were talking about the upcoming Oktoberfest and were saying that while it is going ahead, there are certain to be big physical fights, because once people get a bit to drink then they go out of control. And they'll attack the next foreign looking person (ie non-blond) to walk around the corner.

I'm more worried about you guys though. Insha Allah he will keep you all safe.

salam,

I don't think the students' behavior was appropriate. He should have just left the room or not made it an issue. People are EXTERMELY EMOTIONAL at this time. If you do something like that how can you expect people not to get upset. True you have legitimate greivances but NOW is not the TIME to point that out to people, they just don't see anything right now except the horrors of what they see on TV.

This is Germany that eleanor is talking about, not the U.S.  I think the strategy of da'wah there is a bit more different than here in these circumstances.  So in that sense, I don't think that the student's reaction was entirely wrong ...

A half German half Polish girl stopped to talk to me today and said that she sympathizes with the Muslims as she knows what it feels like to be associated with extremists.

She said that when people find out that she is German, they always assume that she is a neo-Nazi and ask her questiosns like how did the Germans ever allow Hitler to do that?

She said, she knows that the Muslims are being associated with as terrorists and Osama bin Laden and that she's sorry for that.

That was the only good thing that happened today.

Other than that it was bad.

I have a suggestion.  On a lot of news programs on TV and the radio they have people calling in and giving their views.  Why don't some of us try that and give the correct view from an Islamic perspective?  Hundreds of thousands of people would be listening.

I know this morning I listend to a very popular show out here where one Palistinian woman called in and said how her girl was being harassed at school and how she was attacked for being Muslim verbally, and that Islam is not at all about terrorism or killing innocent civillians.  The announcer agreed and informed the audience that it wasn't just him saying this but a Muslim that called in that said this.

Alhamdulillah in Germany it's pretty well-balanced. There are programs on TV all the time covering the attacks and they *always* have comments from Muslims. They are always careful to remind the viewers that not all Muslims are terrorists, they show Muslims praying in the Mosque and emphasise that they condemn the attacks.

Then again, a mosque in Munich was attacked this morning. Someone tried to torch the place and a passer-by and someone driving by (non Muslims)  managed to put it out somehow.

I thought the dawah approach was pretty good. If the person got about 25 people to agree with him/her then I think it's okay. No one is really *that* emotional about it here.
