| Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, I hope all of you are safe, insha'Allah. I gotta say, after what seemed like the longest day, it was wearing to be on those chat sessions or news message boards (I couldn’t stomach most of them for more than 2 min). What I came to realize is that I was wasting my time on these sites, writing posts that were quickly buried by other posts. Very few people seem to be actually reading all the messages (a new page every 10 minutes of mostly angst). True, da’wah can be useful anywhere, anytime, but my GOD, people act irrationally out of fear, anger and ignorance. Although the internet reaches more people, quicker, and it’s still helpful to guide the misguided in the virtual sense, most people were probably not on the internet, but rather, glued to the tube/radio, wAllahu’alim. I think a stronger approach now (maybe in addition) would be to call/email/send letters to your local, state and government representatives. Yes, we should have been doing that all along, the steps towards the “witch-hunt against Muslims” started a long time ago, but now is (again), the time for too-late-da’wah. The other thing to continue doing is to dispel rumors/hearsay about Islam with coworkers and peers, since not all of us can “lay low” for very long. Also, not sure if this happened yet (as I don’t have a functional tv, walhamdulillah), but I think hijaabi women in particular should be on the news representing Islam. I would not suggest that normally, but under the circumstances, it’s clear that many non-muslims think we’re: a) oppressed, b) an easy target. We need to symbolize other than that, namely, truth, freedom and compassion. For places to look for information on how or who to write to, the Wash. Rep on Middle Eastern Affairs publishes info on Congress/Senate/local govt reps from time to time, so their website may be one place to look. And CAIR does pretty well with instructions on contacting the media, although I don’t know where that info is on their website. To clarify, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to get on these websites and represent, but we should also implement other methods of our involvement by taking further steps towards contacting those who may actually be able to do something on the legal/political level. Any other suggestions would be good. JazaakAllahu khairan, be careful (in what you do and what you say), and represent. Take heed of CAIR’s info on what to do if you’re confronted with the FBI, etc. And make du’aa. May Allah protect us all, aameen. |
