Berlin wall, World Trade Centre, whats next? Certain artefacts came to epitomise power and supremacy in the late 20th century. The peculiarity of the edifice of the Pentagon symbolised the home of military strength. The sheer elegance of the downtown Manhattan skyline symbolised majesty through economy and finance. The serenity of the rural retreat of Camp David symbolised the ability of diplomacy and negotiation to succeed where the gun and the bomb failed. However, by the start of the 21st century these metaphors of US hegemony had started to lose their lustre. The crumbling of the Berlin wall was broadcast throughout the world live as it happened. On face value it was the mere demolition of a prefabricated concrete structure that bisected an old and battered city. However in symbolic terms the West saw this, as the final chapter of a Greek tragedy in which an evil system slowly and painfully crumbled under the weight of it own bureaucracy. All that prevailed in the rubble of the wall was the superiority of Western capitalism and democracy. Many throughout the world remember the collapse of the wall with joy even though they knew nothing of socialism or capitalism or what the function of the wall was. That is the power of symbolism. To a people that live out their lives to the scripts of Hollywood movies and buy political thought based on the colour of the wrapping, symbols are everything. So what of the symbolism of the fall of the twin towers that were the twin pillars of freedom in world trade? What of the penetration of the un-penetrable pentagonal citadel? Acts carried out using aircrafts bearing the name of the very country that these buildings were supposed to represent. These acts have shown how empty and bereft of substance the US supremacy really is. The might and strength of the US is nothing more than a sham. Its authority is as shaky as the house of card towers that fell in seconds in downtown Manhattan. The majority of the globe’s inhabitants do not have the luxury of being able to live their lives in a fantasy world of imagery and drama. To the rest of the world the bombing of a pharmaceutical factory in Khartoum is very real. The systematic starving of a nation by sanctions is a very real thing. The cowardice of cruise missile attacks is a very real thing. The agitation of nationalism in the Balkans and the horrors that accompanied it are also very real things. The atrocities carried out by the Israeli marauders are also very real. The barbarism of the Russian and the puppet leaders of the CIS are equally as real. The list of reality after reality goes on. To use the symbolism of the West, the US may live in a goldfish bowl looking out at the world. However, on 11 September a couple of aspirins just got dissolved in that goldfish bowl.
