UK group issues fatwa against Musharraf

LONDON: A British Islamic group has issued a fatwa or decree calling for the assassination of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf for backing the US against the Taliban and Saudi exile Osama Bin Laden.

Omar Bakri Mohammed, head of the Al Muhajiroun, issued the fatwa during an interview on BBC Radio. The group is linked closely with other Islamic groups that claim to recruit young Muslims in Britain to aid jehad.

Bakri Mohammed said: "The fatwa itself declares General Musharraf apostate and, therefore, Muslims in the army should not support him. They should punish him for his crimes."

"The fatwa is calling on Muslims all over the world to stand together and support Muslims in Afghanistan and to reject the authority of Musharraf."

Musharraf has decided to render support to the US in military strikes against Afghanistan in retaliation for last week's attacks on American cities. The US suspects bin Laden, who is being sheltered by the Taliban, to be behind the attacks.

The decree has drastically changed the image of Musharraf in Britain -- from a military dictator to a moderate Muslim opposed to terrorism.

British minister for Europe Peter Hain has asked the police to see if he can be prosecuted for making the demand.

The law in Britain is uncertain on what action can be taken in the face of such public commands to kill someone. Islamic groups in Britain had earlier echoed fatwas to kill celebrated author Salman Rushdie but they could not be prosecuted for it.

The fatwa on Musharraf seems serious in the light of facts that a large number of young British Muslims have been recruited for terrorist attacks abroad.

Oh that's just great.  That's just what Muslims need right now.  More Muslims calling out for killing, and on the BBC no less.  Good timing people.

I would quote Shaykh Hamza on why these statements come out!!
The fact that there are any Muslims -- no matter how statistically insignificant their numbers -- who consider these acts to be religious acts is in and of itself shocking. And therefore we as Muslims have to ask the question, ``How is it that our religious leadership has failed to reach these people with the true message of Islam?'' Because the acts of these criminals have indicted an entire religion in the hearts and minds of millions. Ultimately, this is a result of the bankruptcy of these type of people who claim to be adherents to the Islamic religion. These people are so bankrupt that all they have to offer is destruction.
Excellent analysis of why we allow such statements to be emanated from our communities. They are really bankrupt!! No tolerance.
I guess Muslims need to hear to Shaykh Hamza's lecture on tolerance at the ISNA convention a few weeks back.

Who gave Al-muhaajiroun the right to make Fatwas? Those fools say suicide bombings are allowed! In fact sickeningly one of their guys on Channel 4 last weak had a cheesy grin when talking about the deaths of 5'000 innocent people. Its people like that the media love, they give the public what they wanna hear, they put across the image of a nastey, brutal blood thirsty religion!

assalaamu alaikum

Omar Bakri Mohamed is a self-styled mufti who we should not pay any attention to. This guy needs to be exposed for the scoundrel he is. I am not exaggerating in any way that this guy has hurt da'wah in every single media outlet that there is, whether radio, TV or by paper.
