East Bay scholar attends address
BY RICHARD SCHEININ
Mercury News

Thursday night, when President Bush told Muslims, ``We respect your faith,'' television cameras panned to a face in the gallery of the Capitol.

It was Hamza Yusuf, an East Bay Islamic scholar who met with Bush on Thursday and attended the president's address to a joint session of Congress.

Bush even borrowed Yusuf's ideas and words when he said, ``The terrorists are traitors to their own faith, trying, in effect, to hijack Islam itself.''

Yusuf has been saying the same since the Sept. 11 attacks and spoke his mind to the president Thursday. Speaking by phone from his hotel room in Washington, D.C., after the speech, Yusuf elaborated: ``Islam was one of the victims on that airplane.'' Last week, he said that the hijackers were ``mass murderers, not martyrs.''

Yusuf was pleased to hear the president distinguish between Islam and terrorism. He said the president told him ``that from his own studies of Islam and also from what he has been told by Muslim scholars that he has met, that it was clear to him that Islam was not a religion of hate, but one of the great religions of the world and a religion of peace.''

Yusuf, 43, is a convert to Islam who studied under leading Islamic scholars.
