Salaam! time for introductions

Asalaamu alaikum,

I just wanted to introduce me to all of you.  My name is Ahmed Basha, I'm 21 and from New Zealand (please tell me u know where it is....and no its not part of Australia!!), was born in the sunny isles of Fiji...and I'm a Muslim, Alhamdulillah!

I'm currently doing my Masters at Uni and working on restoring our MSA on campus.  The University that I'm at actually has a purpose built Islamic Centre on campus and yet only a fraction of the muslims use it!  I'm working to change that :)  hmmm on that thought....are there any other universities that have an islamic centre built on campus??

I think this website is the best I have come across and am really impressed by the brothers and sisters that are running it.  Even though we are at different ends of the world, a site like this brings us together with a sense of belonging to one community- one ummah.

As a young Muslim in a non-muslim country I feel I really have to struggle to maintain my identity as a Muslim, it tends to get diluted by these western values.  But with the struggle comes the reward and I believe I am a stronger Muslim. If I would have been in a muslim country, I probably would have taken things for granted.  InshaAllah, through the youth, we will revive Islam throughout the World.  I'll start on my side, you start on yours.

oh and just a question...bebzi??arabic pronounciation of pepsi??

JazakAllahu khairan wasalaam.

My apologies to the people I haven't welcomed here in the last week or two, but welcome to the board brother.  Thank you for that wonderful introduction.  Insha'Allah you will enjoy it here. :)

Yes, bebzi is the Arabic pronunciation of pepsi, and all the adminstrators favorite drink. ;)

Salam,

New Zealand.. interesting..Welcome!

Wow you guys have an Islamic centre on campus. We have to push our University to *at least* build a Multi-Faith centre. Currently Muslims on my campus have the attic of the International Student Centre to pray in and a multi-faith room (Muslim are the only ones that really use it)but we don't have a centre... Kinda sad if you think about it bc we are the largest and richest university in the country. :/

salam and welcome brother,

I would call you a kiwi but we already have someone with that nickname ;)

How's life for Muslims in NZ? Same as Australia? Seems like in Australia there is a huge movement against immigrants and backlash against Muslims...same as everyehwere I guess now...but with the homogeneity of the country it makes it undoubtedly much harder to deal with. I can't imagine if it would be better on NZ because it is a smaller population and an island 2 if i remember?

actually things have been pretty low-key in NZ, no real trouble 'cept a sister getting spat upon in a bus and the swatstika grafittied onto the Mosque sign in Hamilton.  The people of NZ are generally more accepting than Aussies (no offence to anyone from Oz).. but here people haven't a clue about Islam and therefore we have quite a job ahead of us.

I took some pics recently and they're posted at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/masseyunimuslimstudents  have a look in the photos section.

alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu

i pray insha'Allah all of u are well and in a rising state of iman:-)

welcome to the board bro. flyboy..

...masha'Allah..u have an islamic centre on campus???!!!......i'm also green with envy...masha'Allah that's truly amazing...

alhamdulillah at my university there is a muslim prayer house...its a place which is basically for muslim students to pray...not much chilling happens (except maybe in the sisters' area)...it's not a very big house but alhamdulillah at least we have it:-) ....we're out growing the capacity of the house lately..masha'Allah more and more muslims are using it...when the house was first fixed up for the muslims, not many liked to make the 1 or 2 minute walk to get there and pray..everyone kinda prayed around staircases in various places in the university....alhamdulillah now, when prayer time comes, the house is almost full..sometimes too full:-) ...however when there are islamic lectures or social events, they are usually held in a big enough room at the university that we have to reserve....alhamdulillah there are hundreds of muslims on campus:-)

may Allah ta'ala strengthen the muslims on every cmapus and in every corner of the world..it really does take the effort of a few dedicated muslims to get things started....and once others see the effort, they *will* insha'Allah want to contibute...just make sure to always be welcoming and start out with social events and islamic lectures...it'll bring out faces u've never seen before insha'Allah...do lotsa advertising around campus to get the word out...many times people will tell me they don't even know where the prayer house is on campus and they have been at the university for a couple of years...its always a challenge to get more and more people involved..

i just want to mention that its a good idea for the muslim students association on campus to get involved with other groups on campus..for ex. an anti-racism or environmental club, etc.. its a great form of da'wa and it will encourage non-muslims to learn more about Islam insha'Allah ta'ala.....

and last but not least...try to be very approachable...set a good example of what a muslim is...be patient and always smile..and  always make dua' for the help of Allah 'azza wa jal...

i hope that wasn't overwhelming:o

sorry about the structure of this message..i don't have time to spiff it up...;)

if u have any q's brother ahmed..don't hesitate to post them here...there are masha'Allah many muslims that frequent this board and are active on their campus's.

walsamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu

You're very welcome here Brother Ahmed! It is lovely to hear of Islamic experiences in New Zealand!
Mashallah, we have people here from all over the world. I have been to Australia, but never to New Zealand, although I saw how beautiful it is in a Hindi film, if you'll excuse me. (Kaho na Pyar hai). It looked amazingly beautiful to me. (New Zealand not the film).

Well, take care in the meantime, we're looking forward to your input Insha Allah.
By the way, what are you studying? You're doing your masters already at only 21? Mashallah.

wasalaam
