Ottawa teen dies of injuries after beating

Don Campbell
Ottawa Citizen
An Ottawa teenager of Middle Eastern descent who was battered beyond recognition, crawled across a park in a futile attempt to escape his attackers, before collapsing and dying in a pool of blood inside a condominium carport.

Both the Hate Crimes and Street Gang units with Ottawa Police were called in after the teenager, believed to be a Yemeni, was found yesterday morning.

The body was so badly battered that a positive identification had not been made late last night although police believe they know the victim.

It is believed the teen was attacked by two assailants sometime between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. in the normally quiet Nepean subdivision.

The victim was apparently set upon in full view of several witnesses, then bludgeoned with a knife or other sharp instrument.

"All resources are being utilized at this point,"said Staff Sergeant Gerard Sabourin.

"Basically, a person driving by saw a man lying there on the asphalt in the driveway and called us," said Staff Sgt. Sabourin. "At this point, we are interviewing a number of people.

"As yet, we are not working with any strong leads and it is too early for potential suspects."

The victim is not well-known to police other than as a witness in another matter. Police refused to speculate on any connection between the two.

Several neighbours in the immediate area of where the body was found said they returned home late, even after midnight, and noticed nothing out of the ordinary in the carport.

"At 6 o'clock I went out for coffee and didn't see a thing," said resident Pete Patterson. "By 7:20, there ware seven or eight police cars, fire trucks, ambulance and yellow tape all over the park."

"Three murders happen in our city in a year and one happens in your carport, sure it's a concern," said Leanne Thornton, a nearby resident.

"This has way to many questions to it. Who would do this?"

Has Rising Muslim And Arab Phobia Claimed A First Life In Ottawa?
Saturday, September 29, 2001

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Ottawa, Ont.) - Battered and bleeding profusely, the teenager of Middle Eastern descent staggered across a park last night in a futile attempt to escape his attackers, before collapsing and dying inside a Nepean (an Ottawa suburb) condominium carport.

Don Campbell of the Ottawa Citizen reported today that "both the hate crimes and street gangs units of the Ottawa police were quickly called in to assist major crime detectives after an apparent dispute between the teen and likely two assailants erupted into brutal violence sometime between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. in the normally quiet Nepean subdivision."

For Muslim communities across the country, this shocking and gruesome death confirms their worst fears of targeted violence following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. The youth's body was so badly beaten that initial identification could not be made.

"We are waiting for the preliminary police report," said Prof. Mohamed Elmasry, national president of the Canadian Islamic Congress. "If this terrible assault is related to anti-Muslim, anti-Arab and anti-immigrant rhetoric being propagated by a few uninformed extremists in this country, it will compound the tragedy of this young, lost life many times over."

Elmasry is not alone in having predicted a rise in violent hate-crimes, even in traditionally peaceful and tolerant areas of the country. "We at CIC knew this was coming," he said. "It was just a matter of when. This should be a strong wake-up call for the federal government to restore immediately an adequate level of funding so that hate-crime police units and race-relations officers in schools or community centres can do their work -- especially preventive work -- more effectively.

How many deaths are we going to accept before all levels of government are willing to act? One murder is one too many. Unfortunately, there could be more. And it does not help the situation when some media professionals continue to use biased rhetoric that fuels negative feelings toward Muslims, Arabs, immigrants, and other visible minorities."

CIC vice-president Wahida Valiante, a veteran social worker who has made extensive studies of the psychological impact of racism and cultural bias, echoed the shock and revulsion that community leaders are feeling at the news of the Nepean boy's death. "We have been saying for years that negative stereotyping endangers lives," she said. "Now it seems that our warnings are turning into a sad, and frightening, reality."

'He was just starting his life'
Police say race not motive behind slaying of Tareq Aman

Aaron Sands
Ottawa Citizen - 9/30/01

Booze, not racial hatred, apparently fuelled the brutal killing of Tareq Aman, 19, an award-winning rapper whose name means peace.

Mr. Aman's cries for help went unheeded as at least two men stabbed and beat him to death minutes away from his home in a quiet Nepean subdivision early Friday. He staggered across Medhurst Park in a desperate bid to escape his attackers, who kept up a prolonged assault so vicious it horrified seasoned police officers.

Beaten beyond recognition and bleeding profusely from a deep stab wound to his upper body, Mr. Aman collapsed between two cars in a nearby condominium carport and died between 2 and 4 a.m.

No one responded to his screams. A passing motorist noticed the body and called police shortly after 7 a.m.

Police arrested two men yesterday in connection with the slaying. The two are to appear in court this morning.

"The guy was Superman," said Karim Yassime, 20, a close friend of Mr. Aman's since pre-school.

"He was just starting his life. He prayed for everyone, even people he didn't know. Now someone has killed him."

Police said a fight Thursday night between two groups of patrons inside an Ottawa bar led to the capital's third homicide this year. While the Ottawa police hate crimes unit was initially called in, the Muslim man's slaying does not appear to be racially motivated, investigators said yesterday.

Mr. Aman joined his friends at a south-end bar, which police would not name, after he finished his shift at a high-tech company on St. Laurent Boulevard. Around 9:30 p.m., staff asked one of Mr. Aman's friends to leave after he disturbed other customers. On his way out, police said, the man overturned a table in a fit of rage, provoking the drunken wrath of another group of patrons.

A skirmish ensued, said major crime Staff Sgt. Gerry Sabourin.

The groups -- consisting of no more than a carload each -- met up again in Medhurst Park several hours later. During the brawl, at least two men set upon Mr. Aman after he became separated from his two friends.

Staff Sgt. Sabourin said Mr. Aman's friends looked for him after the fight. "When they couldn't find him, they figured he had made it home," he said.

"He cried out for help in the neighbourhood," Mr. Aman's father, Farook Aman, said yesterday. "Nobody came to his help. We do not know what happened or why.

"We are comforted that the authorities will do their best to bring justice."

An autopsy yesterday at the Ottawa Hospital's General campus concluded Mr. Aman died as a result of a stab wound to his upper body.

Relatives, friends and neighbours flocked to the Aman family's two-storey home on Brockington Crescent, where they have lived for the past 18 years. Aman is Arabic for "peace," and his son lived up to that name, Farook Aman said.

"We have great Muslim values in the house and my son was raised accordingly," he said. "I miss him. I miss him dearly."

The father then collapsed sobbing into the arms of friends. When he was able, he told the story of his son.

As a boy, his father said, Tareq would knock on the doors of his elderly neighbours and offer to cut their lawns or shovel their snow. "His charge, as he put it, was a smile," Farook Aman said.

By Grade 7, Mr. Aman was doing so well in school, his teachers wanted to advance him into Grade 9, but he chose to remain with his friends. "He was younger than me but he taught me everything, how to be good to people -- that was his skill," said his friend, Mr. Yassime.

In high school, Mr. Aman spent hours composing, writing and performing rap songs, eventually winning awards from the University of Ottawa's highly regarded radio station.

A prayer service at the Jami Omar mosque on Moodie Drive is expected Monday, followed by a Muslim burial at Pinecrest cemetery.

Mr. Aman is survived by his father, mother Maryam, brother Amir-Hamza, 21, and sister Layla, 14.
