I have to lead a symposium for a class, and I am trying to
find out the differences between the actual beliefs of the Muslim, and
what it is Bin Laden believes.  If anyone has any information at all that
they are willing to share I would be most appreciative.

I am a first time visitor and I have to say that this a wonderful site.
Thank you.

Well Martha,

Islam does not condone or support any type of violence against innocent men, women or children. anyone who calls to violence like that is not following the teachings of islam.

even if one is in a state of WAR there are rules of warfare for example non-combatants cannot be killed, neither can priests or monks in religious houses of worship, you cannot even burn crops or cut down fruit bearing trees!

there are many people that have legitimate grievances against the united states foreign policy because of their unerring political, military and monetary support of millions of dollars of aid to israel who are oppressing and killing and bulldozing homes of innocent palestinians daily; because of the sanctions against muslim countries such as iraq which have caused over 100,000 innocent children to die in the last 10 years while saddam is kept in power; because of american military presence in what people believe to be land that is holy; and over what many perceive as bias and unwanted interference in other countrys' affairs.

still in the face of this injustice and oppression, islam says no one is allowed to transgress the laws of islam, which calls for being just no matter what.

i think it is always important to keep in mind that the theological teachings of islam may be different from what certain people, even if they call themselves muslims do.  david koresh and timothy mcveigh were christians, the cult that put gas in the tokyo subway was a bhuddist cult, the hindu tamil tigers are said to be notorious for their suicide attacks using them to kill such famous leaders as rajiv ghandi. but never once have i seen an article questioning or linking their religions with what they do.

i just wish people would do the same in this case.

I think that's because these terrorists use Islam as a reason and a justification for what they are doing. McVeigh &Co never claimed to have "permission from Jesus/Buddha/ etc" for carrying out terrorist attacks.
That, unfortunately is why they speak of "Islamic terrorists", "Muslim extremists" and "Jihad".

I saw on the news yesterday, that some of these groups had claimed that they had permission,  laid out in Islam, to kill Americans - civilians or whatever, in any country, anywhere, anytime.
It's this stupid kind of reporting and false claims of people who don't know any better, that taint Islam and detract from its true meaning of peace and submission.
That said, they are also always very careful to point out that these groups *do not* represent the Islam which 20% of the world's population practice.
