What is the best way to become an effective Muslim woman public speaker for an American audience?
Do the college courses really work?

Assalaamu-alaikum Kathy

So you wanna become a public speaker? Well first of all the best thing to do is listen to lectures given by the brothers, just listen and listen and listen!

Top speakers i recommened, if your thinking about speaking to non-muslims are Imam Abdullah Hakim Quick, and Ali al-timimi, both of who are softly spoken, and just have a way of gripping the audience! They are also not too "harsh".

Then practice speaking in front of family, them friends, then more and more friends, and people, then hit the big stage! Start off giving introductory talks about islaam at kiddies schools! Then work your way up until your speaking at public events and at Uni's!

Also another good tip is to tell the men and women to split and sit separately ;-)

wlm,

Kathy, there are alot of good books at the library and stuff that teach people how to write and deliver good speeches. Beleive it or not there are a few simple guidelines that you can follow that will make one's speech 100% better than before. There are some devices and forms to good speeches that are common to all of them. If you learn those and practice and follow alot of the advice in those books it will help tons. I wish we could have classes on this.. media/speeches etc.. Inshallah in the future.

As for the college courses -- I believe they talk alot about those forms and tips as well as the psychology behind speeches, audiences, history of speeches and make ppl do alot of speeches as part of the class :)

Listening to speeches is good.. to learn as much as you can..but it doesn't help you to make good speeches unless you want to copy someone else word for word.
