"Sharjah's decision to give women a chance to contribute actively to the political life is a sign of civilisation, while fully complying with the teachings of Islam. We are committed to the injunctions of the Holy Quran. We are civilised and developed and, most importantly, open to other civilisations. We take from the West its technology and science and we have scientific agreements with many European and American universities. But this does not stop us from following our traditions, which is quite different from being extremists or rigorous," Dr Shaikh Sultan, the ruler of Sharjah said. |
