Salam,
I was just wondering whether having braces is haram or not???
A brother was saying afew days ago that its haram because, in the old days ppl used to use sticks to put in gaps between there teeth and the prophet (saws) said it was rong!
This bro said that braces reform your teeth, but I was just thinking…………
Wat if people hav cramped teeth, that cauld lead to teeth decay?
And…. Isn’t braces and wood bits compleatlely different???
Braces spread out your teeth, where aswood bits put splits in em!!!!

Wa-salam

Tell the brother to actually study the hadith and ask someone knowledgable before making such a fatwa. The reason putting gaps in your teeth was not allowed at the time of the prophet [saw] is that it was a cosmetic beauty change. Gaps were attractive during that time just like cosmetic surgery is popular during our time.

Braces are used to correct any form of malocclusion
Now this can vary from the severe (for example discrepancies in the sizes of the upper and lower jaw) to the more milder forms (eg crowding, tilted teeth)
As far as your question that "can it lead to tooth decay".  In short this is sometimes the case especially where cleaning becomes hampered.
However, a lot of current orthodontics is done for cosmetic reasons - esp. in the west.

now during this whole process the teeth are not actually changed (ie parts removed etc) all that happens is that precisely calculated forces are applied to selected teeth to either move or tilt them in the bone.

I hope the above is as clear as mud!!

If any of you ask for a fatwa, i would be interested in knowing if the braces affect the completion of wudu, in regard to the mouth. i am thinking of a comparison to nail polish and not being water not being able to reach the mouth were the braces are "glued" to the teeth.
