No Peaceful Way To Resolve Crisis: Hikmetyar

By Umer Farooq

ISLAMABAD: Tehran-based Aghan leader Gulbadin Hikmetyar said there is no
peaceful way of resolving the impending military crisis in the region as
Americans are determined to attack Afghanistan. In an interview with this
scribe on telephone from Tehran, Hikmetyar said the Americans have approached
him for help in the present crisis, "but I have told them that I would stand
by my nation in this hour of crisis."

In response to a question, Hekmatyar said there was no peaceful way out to
resolve the present crises as the Americans have already made up their mind to
attack Afghanistan. "Their (American's) aim is not simply to topple Taliban
regime, but to control the whole region including Central Asia," he said.
Hikmatyar, who has been residing in Tehran for the last three years, indicated
that he could bounce back in Afghan arena following his five-year absence. He
opined that the first US attack would come from Uzbekistan in the shape of air
or missile strikes against key points.

There are reports of landing of US forces in Uzbekistan including deployment
of US aircraft on Uzbek bases. "This would be followed by ground attack to
capture territory inside Afghanistan," Hekmatyar said. "It is expected that
Pakistan would not allow the use of its soil to attack Afghanistan as it would
not be in its interest," he said, adding that he was in contact with the
authorities of all the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan, including
Pakistan and Iran, on the developing situation in the region.

"I am of the opinion that American attack on Afghanistan would not only be
dangerous for Afghanistan, but it would also destabilise the whole region,"
said Hekmatyar. He said there would be re-organisation of forces in the region
in case of US attack on Afghanistan and many from the ranks of Northern
Alliance would join hands with the "patriotic forces of Afghanistan". "I am
holding negotiations with Taliban and other Afghan groups to prepare Afghan
nation for defending Afghanistan," Hikmetyar said when asked how he would
characterise his relationship with the Taliban leadership.

"I have made some suggestions to the Taliban leadership for national
reconciliation to defend Afghanistan during the negotiations with them," he
said. However, Hikmetyar was highly critical of the Northern Alliance links
with the United States. He said that he was in contact with all the groups of
Afghans and added that many from the ranks of Northern Alliance would desert
it in the coming days.

He said at the advent of Taliban, the US was expecting that they would help in
installing Zahir Shah as the monarch of Afghanistan. "However, their
expectations were not fulfilled," Hekmatyar said, adding: "Now they are again
attempting to impose Zahir Shah as the monarch through military means. I will
enter Afghanistan in case of US attack and my struggle will surely be a
military struggle."
