British Teachers Hate Islamic Faith & Muslims
A Research Study by University of
Derby

In my opinion it is a fact that British education is the home of
institutional racism and teaching is a chicken racist profession. A Home
Office commissioned study has revealed that majority of British Muslims
have been treated badly by state schools and especially by teachers. They
have failed to respect Islamic faith. The Muslim community has been
victim of racial and religious discrimination in employment, housing and
education. After 11th September it is facing unprecedented hostility in
the wake of the September 11 suicide attacks in the United States. The
self-styled and so-called leaders of the Muslim community condemned the
terrorist attacks but inspite of that one of the prominent politician
and ex - Prime minister criticized them for not condemning the attacks
seriously. Instead she should have criticized the so-called civilized,
well-educated and well-informed British society for attacking the
innocent Muslims both women and children. Even Mosques were not spared. Islam
and the Muslim community is a peace loving and law abiding entity,
therefor, no body could dare to take law into their hand. It is a
well-known fact that they have contributed to the economic prosperity and
cultural, linguistic environment of the British society at large. Inspite of
that they suffered in the past, still are suffering and will keep on
suffering as long as the British government and society do not change
their attitudes towards them.

The researchers also found out that the Muslim community was unhappy
about the treatment they received from the media and the education
system. In the early 90s the editor of Newham Recorder gave me the title of
‘School Highjacker’. My crime was a proposal that state school where
Muslim pupils are in majority should be designated as Muslim Community
schools. According to the researchers, the Muslim community claimed that
the schools –rather than universities or LEAs- were the worst offenders.
In my opinion LEAs should be blamed along with schools. It is the
policy of the LEAs that schools and teachers tried to undermine pupil’s
beliefs and practices as being “fundamentalist”, ‘silly’ or unfair to
women. They had negative attitudes towards Islam. They had caused offence by
arguing against arranged marriages or organizing mixed outings

Without consulting pupil’s parents. It was also revealed that 41 out of
49 Muslim organizations believed that teachers had treated their
members unfairly. In the
70s, Inner London Education Authority refused to give me time off to
attend Friday prayer in the nearest Mosque. I was forced to accept a part
time teaching after working for five years as a full time teacher. That
meant no chance of promotion, less salary and pension.

The researchers concluded that a range of strategies is needed for the
solution of the problems faced by the Muslim pupils.  They completely
ignored the role, the need and importance of state funded Muslim schools
as well as Muslim teachers. Teacher is a role model and they need
Muslim teachers to identify themselves with them. Muslim schools and Muslim
teachers will help them to develop Islamic Identity crucial for mental,
emotional and personality development. British Government has given
green light to encourage state funded faith schools. The Muslim community
does not have the resources to set up schools for each and every Muslim
pupil. The silent majority of Muslim parents would like to send their
children to Muslim schools. Unfortunately there is no choice for them
but to send their children to state schools where they suffer socially,
emotionally and academically. The only alternative left is that those
state schools where Muslim pupils are in majority should be handed over
to Muslim educational Trusts and Charities, similar to those schools who
are going to be handed over to private companies. They are in a better
position to educate Muslim children. They understand the needs and
demands of the Muslim pupils as well as their parents.

Muslim schools will not function properly if they do not have Muslim
teachers. They will recruit highly qualified Muslim teachers from abroad
to teach National Curriculum along with Arabic or Urdu and Islamic
studies.  The local Muslim teachers will be employed for the teaching of
English language, literature and poetry. The recruitment of Muslim
teachers will help to reduce teacher’s shortages.

I hope that my proposal will help to raise the standard of education of
the Muslim pupils and solve the problems facing Muslim parents and
children. The Muslim community will feel at home and they will be able to
work for the advancement and prosperity of the British society at large.
It will help to reduce racial and religious tension, which is very ripe
for the time being.
