as salaamu alaykum,

Alhamdulillah, it went pretty well.  About seventy people came, according to the registration.  The speakers rocked mashaAllah.

The security.. was insane :)  Ask someone who was there, they'll tell you about it :P

wasalaamu alaykum.

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

It went really well, program wise.  Alhamdulillah the speakers rocked :)  The only thing is, not as many people as we expected showed up.. and for Br. Hatem's speech (which was the last of the day), half the people had already left :(

The actual conference was awesome.. I just wish more people were there, considering how much effort and energy went into it.

The security.. man.. when we requested security from the Students' Association, they said that they would want a "limited amount" of officers there, because they might be "intimidating".

Ten minutes before the conference starts.. ten cops show up.  They tell us.. there's a new policy: no bags allowed inside, if they're brought in, we have to search them.  Every person has to be patted down, go through a metal detector, and there will be sniffing dogs as well.

You should have *seen* the look on our faces, it was really insane.  I asked the guy "is this done at other events as well?"  and he said yes.  And the conference was just about to start, the head of SA was nowhere to be found, so there was nothing we could do about it.

The worst part is not the security at the conference, but the article that was in the Times Union the next day:

"Listeners were greeted with stringent security measures -- including frisking and sweeps with a metal detector -- in effect for the first time at a student event, said State University Police Lt. David Prendergast. A dog sniffed the campus center ballroom for bombs before people were let in.

University officials were concerned about the Muslim student event because the U.S. has named Muslim extremist groups as prime suspects in the Sept. 11 attacks, Prendergast said. They have not decided yet whether to extend similar measures to other events, he said." (http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyKey=67639&category=C)

:o  We were *on* that reporter the second that wack article came out.  She issued an apology, as did her editor.  But.. we're still waiting for an apology to be published in the paper.

That's about it :)

wasalaamu alaykum.
