Israel congratulates Arafat on crackdown on pro-Afghan rally http://asia.dailynews.yahoo.com/headlines/world/afp/article.html?s=asia/headlines/011009/world/afp/Israel_congratulates_Arafat_on_crackdown_on_pro-Afghan_rally.html JERUSALEM, Oct 9 (AFP) - An Israeli government spokesman on Tuesday congratulated the Palestinian Authority on its police crackdown Monday on anti-American student protests, in which two people were killed and more than 200 injured. "For the first time we congratulate the Palestinian Authority for taking the measures which it promised to implement against terrorists," said Raanan Gissin, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. ------- Agence France Presse October 9, 2001 Tuesday Amnesty condemns reckless use of force by Palestinian police LONDON--Amnesty International condemned on Monday the actions of Palestinian police who it said were responsible for the deaths of two protestors at an anti-US demonstration in Gaza City. "This appears to have been a reckless and unlawful use of lethal force against demonstrators when lives were not in danger," said the London-based human rights organisation. Bloody riots broke out in Gaza City on Monday after police tried to disperse anti-American student demonstrations at the Islamic university. Police blamed masked gunmen in the crowd for the deaths -- which also injured tens of people -- while protestors and a local human rights group said it was the police themselves who opened fire. Amnesty said: "Firearms should only be used to counter an imminent threat to life and only when non-lethal means have been exhausted." The organisation called for an immediate and full investigation which should be carried out by people "known for their integrity and independence". It added: "It should have the power to call witnesses and to protect witnesses. It should sit in public and its report should also be public." |

Israeli occupation army torment Palestinians, taking advantage of war in Afghanistan by Khalid Amayreh Occupied Jerusalem: 10 October, 2001 (IAP News)- With the world's attention focused on the situation in Afghanistan, the Israeli occupation army is doing all it can to persecute, torment and punish Palestinian civilians for daring to revolt against Jewish occupation and apartheid. Indeed, since the 11 September terrorist attacks on the United States, the Israeli army has adopted a clear "overkill policy" toward Palestinian civilians, bluntly ignoring the most elementary codes of conduct of how an occupying power should behave toward its subjects, particularly the non-combatants. "They (the Israelis) felt that this is their opportunity to carry out deadly strikes against our civilians, and they did and are doing that now," said the mayor of Al-Khalil, Mustafa Natshe, whose town bore the brunt of the latest Israeli rampage of terror and murder in the West Bank. According to Palestinian sources, the Israeli army and paramilitary Jewish terrorists killed over 40 Palestinians in the last two weeks, most of them civilians. "To them we are mere numbers, not human beings…and, of course, they don't worry much about international condemnation because they think they are in control of America and much of the Western world," said Taysir Abu Sneina, who has lost two of his close relatives to Israeli shelling of Al-Khalil last week. He added with a wistful look "they are convinced that they could do to us anything they want….so we are the sheep and they are the butchers." On Wednesday, the Israeli army re-imposed a strict curfew on most of Al-Khalil which the Israeli army reoccupied last week, shattering the myths about "liberated areas and occupied areas." "We were deceived and cheated by everybody, by Israel, by Arafat, by the whole world. We are still occupied by Israel very much like the pre-Oslo period…the whole thing was a lie, a big lie," lamented Sami Amre, a resident of Wadi Hariyya, which the Israeli army entered last week and murdered six civilians. "I feel ashamed of myself for having believed Arafat and his group when they told us that were being liberated from the Jews," he adds with deep frustration apparent in the tone of his voice. Sources in Al-Khalil reported that Israeli soldiers posted on rooftops often open fire on Palestinians venturing to get out of their homes, even for an emergency. On Monday, 8 October, a trigger-happy Israeli soldier opened fire on a 13-year-old school youngster, injuring him badly. The boy's family said he was trying to buy bread from a nearby bakery not subject to the curfew. The Israeli army didn't even make any mention of the incident in its daily briefings, a telling fact reflecting the apartheid regime's total disregard for Palestinian lives. Meanwhile, the Israeli propaganda machine continues to strive rabidly to besmirch the Palestinians, the victims of Israeli terrorism, with the terrorist charge. "The best defense is offense," a high-ranking official in the Israeli foreign ministry was quoted as saying on Wednesday. The official was referring to a fresh hasbara or propaganda campaign Israeli and Jewish media around the world will start soon to "refute and dissipate any perceived linkage between Israeli occupation and terror in Palestine and anti-Americanism in the Arab and Muslim world." However, many observers in Palestine think that Israeli propaganda will not succeed in obfuscating the reality, even if they succeed in misguiding and deceiving some people in the United States. ===== Proudly Serving Palestine and AlQuds |

ARAB EUROPEAN LEAGUE (AEL) e-mail: headquarters@arabeuropean.org Web: www.arabeuropean.org HEARING SESSION ON SHARON CASE POSTPONED AT DEMAND OF SHARON'S LAWYER Press release 3 October 2001 Brussels- The hearing session of the chamber of accusation of the Belgian court of appeals that was scheduled today was postponed till the 28th of November at the demand of Ariel Sharon’s newly appointed lawyer Mr. Marsset. Mr Marsset was appointed by Sharon after Friday’s recommendation by the attorney general declaring Belgian courts competent to deal with the complaint against Sharon (a.o.) and refuting all arguments advanced by the lawyer of the state of Israel Michel Hirsh. The argumentation of the attorney general is very likely to be adopted by the court of appeals which will lead directly to the resumption of the investigation againstSharon. It is obvious that Sharon felt that at this stage of the process it is imperative for him to appoint a personal lawyer to defend him as things are starting to become seriously worrying for him. The main witness and civil party in this case, Ms Souad Srour El Merhi showed signs of optimism while leaving the Brussels justice palace this morning, and this optimism was shared by the new lawyers that she appointed to represent her, Mr. Michael Verstraeten and Mr. AlexanderSachem. The Arab European League shares this optimism to a great extent and is convinced that this file is taking a very positive turn. Nevertheless, we do call upon everybody not to jump into conclusions and not to shout victory too soon. We should be aware that even though things are looking more and more tight for the other party, they will not spare any effort to get out of this situation. However, our trust and belief in the Belgian judiciary system is stronger than ever after the brilliant decision by the attorney general, and we are quit confident that the Belgian chamber of accusation will not succumb to any politicalpressure. This case is a righteous case, and we are not asking anything more than justice, but we do call upon all parties involved in this case and who want to see justice done to act in the most responsible way and to be on the level of the historical responsibility that is required. |
