Al-Humdullillah! I have missed you already! The Den Mother left before I could say good-bye!

The cubs are restless...

Insha Allah, Allah swt will reward you with good. How is the 'political' atmosphere there?

Ps- I am keeping my promise and staying away from the cow jokes...
but- others have not been so good....

Walaikum salam wa rahmatallah,

How are you? Subhanallah, I'm so jealous of you right now.  Do me a favor, go out a buy a big shawarma 'arabi for me... :)

So, how is ustadha Iman?  Have you gone to Al-Qariyah yet?  How is Yusuf and Azeema?  Man, did you have Azeema's biriani yet?  Send them my salaam, and tell them I miss their biriani :)  (I wish we had a 'yummy' smiley face, I would use it so much :)

Take care,

Well I have to say that living in a foreign country where you don't speak the language isn't very easy. Today the micro (what you'd call a minibus) driver decided not to continue with all the stops he's supposed to take, the last one being the university where I needed to go. He just asked me something and I kept saying Jamiat Dimiashq!! then he turned around and started going the other way.. probably because i was the only one left who needed to go all the way and he thought just kick her out and head back to make some more money instead of going all the way. So then I jumped out. I wish I demanded my 5 lira back. So then I had no idea where I was so I asked a different micro guy.. Ana sa'ath-habo ila jamiat dimashq, so he's like ok hop on.. so i get on.. but of course the guy is not going the right way so I think he's going to the OTHER campus on the other side of town. So now I'm sort of panicking and the bus keeps going like to God knows where... so finally I jump out I have no idea where I am and there's tons of freaks around as usual in some seedy part of town. So I think... let me just take a taxi...this time I'm going to be smart and say the university campus IN Mezzeh. So I tell the taxi driver.. and he goes ok 75 lira!!! (for what is at most 15 lira ride) so I'm like forget it then I ask another greasy taxi driver and he goes.. where you from etc..banglades??banglades?? i'm like no min al hind.. so then after all that he says 25.. then i'm like meter!! turn on the meter.. so he like most of the sleazy taxi drivers says 'oh it doesn't work'.. so i'm like forget it. I have to say that I'm used to being in strange places with strange ppl and figuring how to get out but man...this is like panic... at this point i'm wondering what the hell i'm doing in this country.. so then i found these two policemen/soldiers and tried to get across to them what I wanted.. so they wrote the stuff down and said go show it to the micro drivers.. so i did and finally got to the university l, a little worse for wear, but unbelievably still on time.

And on the good side of things yesterday I went to this cool restaurant place call Al Qariya yesterday with a whole bunch of student/foreigners here. Some from ottawa, soem from cali, etc. It's about half an hour outside of the city just sitting there in the dessert. It's like a huge country club with fountains, waterfalls, waterways.. a drinks bar (no alcohol or pork!) a masjid, etc. We spent the day there and ate some divine food kabobs, chicken, salad, fatoosh, hummous, ice cream, chai etc.. it was alot of fun alhamdulillah.

Ok well gots to go, inshallah will write more later.. the email i'm using here is jannah@altavista.com

I know i'm not really a fellow Albanyian, but I've been enjoying reading about your adventures in Dimashq :) Inshallah you'll have many more wonderful stories to share w/ us, and a lot of knowledge too!  It's been a little secret wish of mine to go to syria too. one of my friends who went there loved it, and is know living there. (wouldn't it be neat if you met her :))

I've been trying to learn a little arabic here and there, actually i get these emails from Islamic Kids Stories and they're doing little arabic sentences from a children's book, so I understand a little bit of what you wrote-could you (or someone else) translate what you said?

Take care!

assalamalaikum,

jazaks' for the support... i guess there is good and bad in any place.. i do miss home a bit.. but then not really :) just my family i guess.. otherwise it is quite fun being here... living the student life again where the only obligation you have is to study!

i think my arabic has improved... Allahu Alam... arabic is a HARD language... this chinese girl dropped out because she couldn't take it and her language has 50 letters!!

ahh so what else i'm excited about ramadan!

Ramadan Mubarak to you all :) from all of us in Dimashq... we are thinking that it will be friday here inshallah.. i'm so excited to spend ramadan in a muslim country. the girls and i plan to go to as many masjid's as we can for taraweeh. all in all it should be really good inshallah...

the odd thing here is that people think ramadan is a "good luck" month and they have all these good tv shows and series on tv.. that sometimes ppl end up spending ramadan watching them!

anyways may Allah help you all to do as much as you can in this blessed month and to take advantage of this opportunity!

please don't forget to make dua for me! :) :) ;) :) ;) :D :-D :-)

ps where are all the girls in my community??? chicas? forgot all about me how sad :(

pss i would post this in the ramadan courtyard but i think the board is broked' again... ahh well... :)

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaauthu

im not an albanian either but LOL subhanallaah sis....i was in studying in egypt last year and you just brought sooo many memories flodding back - especially trips on the microbuses...once i was in a microbus that was supposedly going to my destination but it was taking a different route, so i was pakicking - then the driver decided to voertake a donkey cart, and didnt see the car coming from the other side, so he swerved back in lane and crashed into the back of the donkey cart, and the whole front windscreen smashed inwards, so we had to vacate the bus....and i had no idea where i was! so i got on another bus too...going the wrong way....and like u sis, i resorted to the beloved taxi too.  hehe, only my problem wasnt that i didnt know arabic..it was that i didnt know EGYPTIAN arabic! lol!

ramadhaan was absolutely amazing too...make the most of it..now that its ramadhaan again and im back in uk, i miss it so much. :(

lol subhaanallaah...theres nothing like being in those countries, then just thinking about your experiences and thinking...DID THAT REALLY HAPPEN? hehe...oh, and what everyone is telling you about water is GOOD ADVICE! (trust me on this one lol)

Subhanallah, it sounds like so much fun!! insha'allah summer vacation, one of these years. That microbus thing sounds great! At least now that you've had all these interesting experiences, whan I go, I won't end up in weird places with groups of 'greasy guys' on the corner! that's funny. And the cab drivers? what an experiencce. Sooooo..what are you bringin me back?? anyway, all is well here in Troy (it's not only albany!!) You've probable heard all the good news that's goin around here...auntie razia, and all these people getting married..man, we miss you up here! all right, we know you're addicted, but you have to go to class. salaam

wlm,

alhamdulillah things here are good...i found a whole bunch of foreign girls going to school here from england and canada and the US. we go to taraweeh every night.. we've tried different masjid's every night!! we also hang out together and go to restaurants and sites, it's amazing that dimashq has so much islamic history. just to know the khalid ibn waleed, salahuddin ayyubi so many sahaba and rightous people walked her, lived here etc is overwhelming...

there are drawbacks of course.. it's not like home.. we're "foreigners" here which really isn't a very good status. but alhamdulillah we are learning alot and that's really the point eh...

so what's this about people getting married left and right and popping out babies... and ms. roach!!!????? ur kidding right... i'll kill that chica if she even dares try to get hitched witout me...?? what's up with this....

tell me all about it...

aiite...enjoy ramadan inshallah.. i miss bro M's recitation and chilling at the masjid for taraweeh and going to iftar's...

take care inshallah and say salam to all the girls!

Assalaam Alaikum Wrt Wbt,

Eid Mubarak from Dimashq!!!!  We are having eid either saturday or sunday inshaAllah. I miss everyone very much. Ramadan here has been great but nothing beats ramadan with your family in your own community.

It's been a pretty awesome experience being in a Muslim country. We've visited maybe over 15 different masjid's across the city. And Lailatul Qadr you should have seen that!!! It was as if a carnival opened up in front of every masjid, shawarma stands and sweet bread sellers and everything, masajids packed with thousands and thousands of people across the city. It was pretty crazy. We actually went to do lailatul qadr at a few masajid's and they were packed!!! literally not a single place to put your head in sujood.. we prayed a few outside and then went to Ummiyyee where they didn't really do any qiyaam, just sung some nasheed and stuff but then we prayed fajr and came home. The nice thing about living in a Muslim country is that you can walk to the masjid for all the prayers and it's really nice to pray in jamaa. There was one masjid I liked the most called Badr the recitor is trained in Saudi so has the shaatri style!! but on the last night he just did 3 ayahs per rakah... so sad ;((

anyway please keep me in all your duas... appreciate the fact that you're with your family and friends.. and make dua for all the foreign students here who left their communities only for the sake of Allah to learn the deen and spread it.

Salaam

salams y'all,

i am missing home alot these days...thought i would drop a line... living here is like living a different life.. you forget what you were living before and when you go back it will feel just like a dream...

the amazing thing here is that there are sooooo many foreign students here from all over the world and so many from the us and canada and britain... i was sitting in a room watching omar mukhtar in arabic with 8 second generation muslims who left their homes just in pursuit of knowledge here... it's really amazing.. we were discussing this the other day and someone asked will all these students change anything in the future.. is this a movement?

i think it is...it's sort of an equalization of sorts...people who don't know arabic want to seek it so they can be better in their deen...their parents were content with what they had but we're not. i also think its soooo important that these people are here all learning and will one day return home and hopefully teach others. i have to say i never thought we were that lacking in resources back home but we are seriously deficient in our knowledge and learning.

what impresses me most here is that the women are sooo educated.. they have masters in fiqh...it is common to be a hafiz or have ijaza in tajweed which means you've memorized the quran in the way of the prophet and it's certified..it's very impressive. i guess this means we have to raise our standards and strive harder..inshallah

ok have to chip...(british know what i'm talking about:))
salaam

Al hamdu lillah it's wonderful that so many people are travelling in search of knowledge.  I'm seeing the same thing here in Morocco.  My father runs a language school, and he has about 6 or 7 American Muslims teaching there, all very young (in their 20s). (he tries to hire Muslims whenever he can... wanna job anyone? ;)) They're all in Morocco mainly to learn arabic and to get their families away from the fitan of the US.  They're also all learning qur'an and calligraphy and stuff like that ma sha Allah.  They've made their own little community there, and it's all for the sake of Allah.  They must be getting lots and lots of ajr and reward from Allah!

I am not Albaynian, but have been following this thread with great interest .
Somebody very close to me is leaving with his family for Dimashq next week(classes start on Jan 15), leaving all the benefits of duniya(great job, home, fimiliar environment etc etc) just to learn the dinn and as MF said

.." to get their families away from the fitan of the US"

I hope and pray that he and all those students that jannah met and Jannah too get/got what they were looking for and may Allah swt accept their efforts, Ameen.

On a serious note what do you think will be acheived by all the people teaching ?. So many people are learning especially many women but what do you think will the fruits of this knowledge be ?. I'm all for leanring however, don't you think this knowledge needs to be put into practice as well.
What are your goals Jannah if you don't mind me asking to putting this knowledge you've gained into practice. Are you gonna open up classes for teaching young kids, learn sign language so you can give dawah to disabled kids etc etc.

Assalamu alaikum
I saw on TV that it was snowing in Dimashq and I immediately thought of jannah :):) I was thinking: I know someone who's there and then I thought... hmmm, no I don't, but anyway I was thinking you'd be thrilled when it snowed.
To answer Abu Fatima's question, insha Allah any amount of knowledge gained is significant, even though a person doesn't start a movement or revolution with it.  If all the people who are studying Arabic for the sake of Allah and for the sake of understanding the Qur'an better do no more than teach it to their children, that's already something huge.  There's a whole generation right there who would otherwise not be speaking Arabic and not understanding the Qur'an.  Al hamdu lillah that there are all these people giving up so much and goign through so much to gain that knowledge.  If they're doing it with no intention of ever starting any kind of movement, only with the intention of pleasing Allah, then to me that's huge and noble in itself.
