Being a tomboy bruises were met with frowns by my long-suffering momma but well, she always see it as character building.

Happy days were when heavy rain was considered to be God's natural shower and mom allowed us to soak ourselves silly in the rain, when dad would slip us 10cents without mom's knowledge so we could buy coklit and when we could brag that we could swing higher than the rest......

Now, my son insists I bring an umbrella when it rains, has to be shooed into playing outdoors and asks me whats the point of swinging back and forth.  Sigh....

It sounds like they went a little too far back, I don't remember those things.  I liked taking a tennis ball, tossing it up in the air, and swinging a bat at it, and watch the ball sail far away.

Yeah.. I remembered one fateful day, when it rained hard after our daily Qur'an reading class... the water reached to our ankles and we stomped and splashed with our small feet in slippers while we walk and ran back home... Our gleeful laughter and thrill so joyous! My mom never allowed us to play in the rain... so that day was a major ESCAPADE!

And the bike! My BMX blue bike that my late grandfather bought me, for my 10th birthday *I think!* The bike that I went racing with one of the neighbourhood boys *shockohorror! Yes, yes.. All in the name of a race - I'm not that all shy, you know!* And I nearly lost control of my bike as we sped through the neighbourhood ... but of course he won... he's older and bigger.. and so is his bike.

And the swing! Oh the swing! I'd swing sooo high! Feeling the speed of the wind in my face and hair and hmmm...

And now... now that I've grown up... well, I still swing... rarely, but surely.. at night, when noone's at the playground that is so conveniently near our flat, I'd swing sooo high, I could almost touch the sky *hmmm, where did I hear that from?*... only to stop, when the neighbours start peering from their apartment windows.. probably... worriedly wondering whether its a Mad Hijabi or Casper on that swing....

Ahh well... the things children enjoy.... and the adults envy....

Wassalam :-)

it's pretty much my childhood and I'm 25 now, so I don't know if that makes it too far back or too near the present for you brother Arshad!!

Not that far back Bro, I'm not much older than you. Although I may look young thats due to me using Oil of Ulay and getting enough Beauty Sleep(not that I need it).

What they had Chips in Ireland ??? Maaan that was a classic, when I looked at those guys I too wanted to be a cop however, one of them that guy who looked a bit Mexican was a bit too cheesy with his smile. ;).

Another brief time in my childhood I used to bake potatoes/chicken in the ground and have secret dens and hideouts did anyone else...or was it just me ?

When Chips would come on, I would run up to the TV, reach my hand out like I was grabbing something from the screen and then proceed to "eat the show" and say, "Look mommy I'm eating chips!"

Man, I was a *dork* :)

Oh Yes!! I remember someone asked me my favourite hobby once to which I replied "climbing trees".  My little brother was even worse. He used to go around with a "tool belt" thinking he was McGyver. Once he fell out of a tree and was left hanging from a branch by the straps on his dungarees. (american: overalls). His friend saw him swinging up there and alerted my mother who got him down somehow. When she asked him what would he have done if his friend hadn't found him, he said "well I suppose I'd be hanging there all night in my pyjamas.." He was about 5 at the time... ;-D He was a maniac. Once he dressed up as Zorro and scratched "Z" all over the neighbours car! :O :O (we had very understanding neighbours.. they also didn't mind when he painted their gate green)

When I was just a 'lil girl,
My kid brother asked me, what is this thing, that mommy used...
But on that day, my spelling failed me...
for this is what I read to he...

Que Sara, Sara...

That thing is called Oil of Ugly, you see..
If you wanna be beautiful, like she...
U use Oil of Ugly...

seems like it was just yesterday
screaming around and playing like that all day long.
15p for a bag of chips that we'd all walk home sharing.

Does anyone remember a program called 'monkey magic'? I don't remember the story lines but one thing that has stuck in my head ever since I was little was the really c@@l theme tune.

Han.

Born from an egg on a mountain top,

The punky-est monkey that ever was,

He knew every magic trick under the sun,

Monkey Magic Monkey Magic,

Monkey Magic Monkey Magic,

Monkey Magic Monkey Magic,

*sigh*...yeah the good old days are gone..when one could get away with being naughty.

My favourite hobby was putting papa's white shirt and go insect hunting, cutting down their legs and arms and then plaster them back, all the while wondering why so many were dying ??? Man, was i lousy doctor!

My other favourite time was when i used to sit on the kitchen floor on a hot humid day in moqdishu with a huge slipper to kill flies.I used to count how many i kill everyday and challenge myself to break my record.

hmmm...on the other hand i guess it's good growing up...at least for the sake of those poor creatures ;-D

..ahhh yes those WERE the days...

I also remember coming home for lunch and watching Trumpton, Camberwick Green, Magic Roundabout, Rainbow and Bod. (My sister was telling me that Rainbow is making a come back, I think I saw a tee-shirt with Zippy on the front the other day!)

As for Knight Rider and Chips we would watch it as a family, even mum and dad loved them. ( I think my mum had a secret thing for Erik Estrada, she loved his smile :-) )

My fondest memories of my childhood are meeting up every weekend with my cousins and a couple of other close friends. We would spend the whole day playing in the fields behind my uncles house.

Hide and seek, rounders, seven stones, and of course cricket! We used to team up girls versus boys and of course the girls always won!

...ahh yes those were the days... :-)
