Muslim Women's Games to be held in Iran as an int'l event

Tehran, Oct 7, IRNA -- Secretary-General of Iran's Olympic Committee, Bahram Afsharzadeh said here Sunday that the presence of Muslim women from over 30 countries at the Third Muslim Women's Games indicated that the event is becoming international.  Afsharzadeh told IRNA, "Giving importance to women's sporting community and believing in their capabilities should be accepted as a principle." He however regretted that not much attention is given to  women's sports in Islamic countries.  He noted that women's sporting programs are still planned and organized by men, and they have not yet come to the conclusion that women themselves can undertake such an important task. He stressed that the entire affairs of the secretariat in charge of the upcoming women's sports event will be managed by women, and administration of such a great assembly reflects women's extreme
creativity and capability.

He added that Iranian women have believed that they are in a position to host such a major women's sporting event at the global    level, while keeping their values and beliefs.  He said, "Islam respects women for nurturing scholars, heroes and political personalities, while their rights have unfortunately been denied."    He referred to the establishment of sporting relations among women athletes from Islamic countries as a means of establishing understanding, peace, friendship and the basis of creative planning   for exchange among civilizations.  Afsharzadeh pointed out, "We possess significant tools for establishing global communication and dialogue among civilizations, one of which is 'sports', since sports are dominated by sincerity, peace and solidarity.

He welcomed the attendance of foreign guests, observers from world sports federations, Asian Sports Confederation, and the Asian Olympic Council. "Officials currently planning the principal policies of the International Olympic Committee and AOC will also attend the event,   which is considered to be important," said the official.  He said, "The participants in the upcoming sporting event are envoys who convey Iran's message of peace and friendship to the world, and demonstrate the capabilities of our women managers and athletes to the entire world."  Some 900 medals in 15 categories of sports will be awarded in the event, concluded Afsharzadeh.

Wow!!  The Iranians really impress me :) They think of everything!!!! :)  It's a great idea!  I saw a TV program a while back about Muslim sports-women in, where else, Iran.  Who ever said hijab is constraining?!  They could do everything with their hijab!  And so could we :-)

In response to the question : "Will the audience only

If the audience were only women and children, then I, for one, wouldn't
be wearing hijab to ski/run/shoot/row/ride/kick.

Asslamu Alikum

I don't think women can participate in many sports to tell you the
truth.  I used to go cycling and practise karate.  But don't do any of
these, I can't find anywhere a club that would have only women's club for
karate, as I used to love practising it.

It's easier for men, they can do more sports, also getting into a game
of football would be no hassle for them.

As salamu alaykum

I still go biking and play tennis.  I just make sure that I'm dressed islamically.  Find a seamstress and have large, long t-shirts with long sleeves made.  My t-shirts go down to my knees.  I don't play soccer any more, but I don't think that it has anything to do with my being a Muslim.

As for the men they still need to make sure that they are dressed islamically too.

Arsalan.. if you been to Iran you would see televised sports where women wear hijab and i would assume the same for this event. Some sports arent televised and women have their own women stadiums where only women and children are allowed.

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

Like Marcie, I don't think the hijab is a barrier to play sports and be healthy. I've jogged, played netball, badminton, cycling, go parasailing, jet skiing, snorkelling with hijab, alhamdulillah. And no, I don't live in a Muslim country.

Like Marcie again :), I'd wear something loose... Long sleeved T-shirts that are big, go down my knees, with track bottoms.. and of course... hijab. :)

To me, it's about niyyah and confidence. It may be awkward at first, for the public and us, perhaps... but when we first wear the hijab, don't we feel a bit strange too?

But being human, we are susceptible to social conditioning... and things would seem as a normality given time, inshaAllah :)

Like se7en once said... "If you can rock it, wear it"! ;)

Take care, all
wassalam :-)
:O:O You went snorkeling in hijab!?.... How oh how did you do it?? Details!!
Hee hee :)

OK, I wore this really extra large babydoll dress (I think I can fit into it even if I'm 9 months pregnant!) that I bought in this reject shop (the treasures you can find there!). It's long sleeved and covers my knees... Cottony T-shirt type material, and it's in good quality too, alhamdulillah. And I wore a pair of track bottoms.. the shell suit kind, without the cotton lining - well, that's pretty light. And I wore a cotton hijab.

We were on holiday at a beach resort... a Family Retreat for my workplace. Me and 3 other sisters went out in a boat and we were brought to this spot where they've got coral reefs... about a 10 minutes journey from the resort. I was really excited coz it was my first time snorkelling and I've been wanting to do this for YEARS!

So, when I gotta know they've got snorkelling and we can go as a private group, if I can find enough people... I grabbed those sisters and off we went.. in the hot afternoon. Got into the snorkelling gear and flippers... got down the boat and woohoo! a-snorkelling we go!

We gotta tuck the corners of the hijab around out temples in, so that water do not seep in the goggles. Then... you just go floating at the surface of the water, and breathe through the  mouthpiece... and flip flip flip... way cool.

The corals that we saw are not like those in the Great Barrier Reef, but subhanallah, they are still beautiful... pink and orange.. with fishes swimming around them. I'd love to go to places with better reefs though, inshaALlah.

Oh yes! Bearing in mind that I was wearing a baby doll dress, and the material is not those thin cotton type, well, it was a bit difficult climbing up back to the boat.. you know... heavy clothes and giant flippers.... I, of course.. look like an alien coming out from the deep blue.

But one good thing abt the dress is that due to its cut and material, it doesn't stick to your body, when you're all wet... Plus the hijab help loads as well, alhamdulillah.

But wow :) Really loved it, mashaAllah :)

Well... hope this helps, Nazia... :-)
and hope you'll find more joy snorkelling than I did, inshaAllah :)

wassalam

slm,

LOL sister..that was really funny..i'll remember you when and if i ever go snorkling :)

I heard that in Abu Dhabi in the UAE there are secluded beaches for only women. They're some kilometers outside the city and no men are allowed in the vicinity. It's really cool. They have women life guards and all. What wouldn't i give to live in a place like that..*sigh*..

Seriously, you're invited anytime...don't believe me? Just call and find out!
Mind you I wouldn't want you to be disappointed at the serious lack of Muslim Activities here. You'd probably be bored out of your mind. :o  Then again we could host our own Muslim Womens' Games..starting with Karom, then ice skating and then umm.. (searching around for something else..) mmm.. oh yes! then synchronised swimming in the river!! :-D (not!) We could even wear matching hijabs and don't worry about the fixed smile..our mouths would freeze into position in under five seconds. ;-D
