I am sure you have seen, as well as I have seen on TV the images of some Islamic schools in places like Pakistan, where the boys are learning the Koran. Apparantly, these students are not taught anything else, other then the Koran. I noticed that the boys while at there studies are rocking back and forth, some in a fast motion, others in a more forcefull manner. I have seen some Jews do this as they pray, but this is the first time I noticed it in Muslim students. Any ideas as to why they are doing this? I am not aware of any religious reason for it. I do know that in psychology, this rocking motion is found in kids that did not get the care, and nurturing from parental figures, so they rock themselves back and forth for comfort. Example - a mother rocks her baby back and forth to calm them down, or show affection, and a child who does not get this, may rock themselves later on for comfort. And it was interesting to me that it was reported that the boys while in these schools, have no contact with women, not even their mothers. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas, or thoughts on this. |

Salam to you sister rock and the world rocks with you! tell me sis when the music plays do the bodys sway! For the Believers the Quran is Music for the soul. It is the food that nourishes the thirsty. Especialy in children, they are uplifted with the words and they are submerged with its rythem. I too! at times sway lightly as i pray for the soul is in sheer delight with ALLAH swt words. It definatly ROCKS! |

Bismillah and salam, For as far as I know we are supposed to be very still. The way the sahaba describe it is like a stick stuck in the mud i think haha. I have a tendancy to rock, but i fight it whenver i catch myself doing it. |

[slm] Interesting observation Shakira. But I don't have any opinion on it. As far as I know we are discouraged to rock back and forth while reading the Quran or praying. [wlm] |

assalaamu alaikum Funny, because my team leader actually asked me about this last week. I didn't have any answer except to say that its probably done subconsciously. I remember when i was in a Qur'an class when i was young that my friends also rocked back and forth whilst reciting. I find myself rocking too sometimes but i do consciously work to minimise it. AA I heard from one hafiz is that it's somehow related to getting beaten when you say the Quran wrongly, some kind of avoidance behaviour ? BTW, is it not disgusting that we cry at all the injustice in the world, but the method of teaching Quran in some parts of the world (the beating style) don't get anyone excited ? |

slm the stillness which we are to observe is the stillness of the heart. being firm in faith and grounding yourself. in children this is a natural movement of swaying as they are memorizing, reciting. in Dhikar i tend to sway a bit and i have never been told not to. i feel that this is not distracting in anyway and the hearing the Quran and reciting it is really a cause for celebration. in adults it should lessen, but as far as i know it is not prohibited at all. |

slm we dont live here in the dark ages. As far as the beating is concerned that was done many years ago and that too isolated incidents. take a look at the madrasas now and i am sure you will be pleasently surprised. and Sister Shakira it does not have anything to do with children being unloved and thus the swaying movements. and yes they are taught schooling afterwards.and most all the children who have memorized the Quran excell in thier secular studies. those who can not afford to put thier children through school for various reasons they wish atleas for the children to familiarse themselves with the Quran. For the Quran opens the doors for light to be poured into your heart. |

From Munajjid: Question: My questions relate to Bida'a. At the Mosque I attend I see brothers performing actions which I think are Bida'a but require confirmation with sources. I would like to try correct these practices, Inshallah with Hickma, if there are incorrect. [...] 4. Swaying while sitting in Salat or reading Qu'ran. Answer: Praise be to Allaah. Any act of worship must be based on evidence (daleel) from the Qur’aan or saheeh Sunnah. One of the principles of this religion is that Allaah cannot be worshipped except in the ways that He has prescribed, and He cannot be worshipped in innovated ways (bid’ah). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that is not part of it, will have it rejected,” i.e., his deed will be unacceptable to Allaah. [...] As for swaying when reciting Qur’aan or praying, this is habit of the Jews in their worship, so the Muslim should not do it deliberately. (See Bida’ al-Qurra’ by Bakr Abu Zayd, p. 57). One of the ways of wisdom (hikmah) in da’wah and combatting wrongdoing, to which you refer in your question, is to ask people for the evidence for what they are doing, because it is not permissible to worship in ways for which there is no evidence, as we have pointed out above. The burden of proof rests on the person who is doing the deed, not on the one who is seeking to correct him. May Allaah give us and you the strength to do good. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad. Assalamo elikuim I agree with blissfull about the condition of madarasas. I read an article(maybe my brother still haev it ) about benefit of being a haffiz not just the rahma etc but how a person memory improves etc etc.. The condition of madarassas have changed/improved a lot – there might be some where children are exploited/beaten but that is not majority. I remember when my older son was just months old me and my husband were thinking of enrolling him when he grows up i.e. may be 7 or 8 years at one the hifz school in Karachi and contacted one of the school (Iqra) thinking that we have plenty of time, we were pleasantly surprised to see that there was a long waiting list for his class, which was to start in 2002! Wasalam tq |
