| slm OPERATION ENDURING MERCY Emergency Relief for Afghan Refugees * 70% of Afghans are at risk of starvation-7.5 million are women and children (UNICEF) * By November predictions estimate 5.5 million will be totally dependent on foreign food aid (World Food Program) * Refugee populations are increasing at an astronomical rate * Border camps are unable to provide for new masses of refugees * mounting fears of a humanitarian catastrophe are in the making Dear Brother or Sister: Assalamu Alaikum! The catastrophe is overwhelming. A multitude of disasters has hit Afghanistan. These include 3 years of severe drought, 20 years of war, famine, displacement and now possible military action. Refugee camps are already overcrowded. They cannot provide for the millions of "new" refugees. Afghans fleeing are arriving at camps, but only 2 weeks worth of food and water remain. Millions of lives are at risk. 7.5 million women and children face starvation. Estimates show that 1 to 2 million Afghan refugees will attempt to cross over into Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands wait at the borders. Many others are on the move throughout the impoverished country. They are vulnerable and in desperate condition. The UN declares that the Afghans face the "worst humanitarian crisis in the world." Unfortunately, this crisis will worsen. Afghanistan's merciless cold weather is already coming. Uncertainty lies in the air. The internally displaced population increases. Military action appears likely. Still, the children must eat. Global Relief Foundation plans to provide thousands of families with food aid, shelter and medical assistance. Personnel and relief supplies have been dispatched to the region. Never before have we experienced such a great need-Afghans are lacking in even the most basic necessities. GRF will put your donation to immmediate use by supplying tents, blankets, winter clothing, food, medical supplies and water purification tablets. We will sponsor the most needy in the camps near Quetta and Peshwar. Operation Enduring Mercy has been launched by GRF as a massive emergency relief campaign. Afghan refugees are our top priority.
