Introducing myself...

Assalamu Alaikum! I have been reading posts here for a few days, and have decided to put my toes in the water and register, becomming a part of the warm loving companionship here. I am a white female (48 years old) who was a soul-searcher for close to three years when I found Islam...or Islam found me. I said my Sahada over the phone with my son-in-law who is Muslim, from A.U.E. close to a year ago now. Nothing in this world has filled my heart with so much! I am a totally different person...may Allah be given all the glory! I DO have a question about Rahmada...this will be my first. I was a Christian many years ago...the way they teach fasting, is that you stay on your fast for X-amount of days, taking no food or drink, tho you ARE allowed to drink water. How do I fast now that I am a Muslim? Thank you so very much for the kind instructions I know you will be giving me. Everyone here is so nice...so hoving....In peace, Safa

Assalamu Alaikum,

Welcome dearest sister to Islam and the madina community ^_^.

The Muslim fast is to abstain from food, drink, sex, back-biting, smoking etc from dawn to dusk.
There is a whole forum for Ramadan, you may find answers to your questions in there. If not, then feel free to ask and we'll all try to answer your questions as best as we can. ^_^

Salam,
merimda

Salaam Sis

May you be showered with peace and fulfillment, Amin.

Ramadan is a beautiful month where we purify our soul and devote all actions and thoughts towards being close to ALlah and to be as good a Muslim as we can.

Fasting is abstaining not only from food, drink and sex from sunrise to sunset but its also abstaining from anything that might affect our soul negatively, ie, gossiping, slander, stealing, impure thoughts, and everything and anything that will deviate your efforts from being good.

The nights of Ramadan is a special night, personally even the night sky seems quieter and more reverent to me.  You can fill the nights with tarawih, a special prayer in ramadan and also the recitation of the Quran.  If you can't do both yet, you can zikir, that is sitting and offering praises to ALlah.

Most importantly, Ramadan is the perfect month for repentance, so what I always do is, after my tarawih and Quranic reading, I TALK to Him, and talk and talk. And you know what ? He actually Listens :)))

I pray that all your efforts will be blessed this Ramadan Mubarak. Amin.

Asalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah!

I hope you have found, like I have, happiness and peace in islam. We are finding ourselves thrust into a brave new world, alhamdulillah! The prophet, on whom be peace, said that a time would come when holding onto Islam would be like holding onto a hot coal. Alhamdulillah, the problems facing the muslims seems to me to be the same today as they were in the beginning. Even Salahudin had to drag himself out of bed for fajr! The same, by the grace of Allah, does not apply to the holy month of ramadan. Before embracing Islam, I wondered how I could live without christmas and new year. But I can say now, after 4 years, there is no happier time in my life than Ramadan. There is no time when I feel more alive, and no time when I feel prouder to be a muslim.
Of course the above posts are correct, but I find once you have made a clear intention to Allah, and you fast well, everything else falls into place.

Wa alaikum asalaam sister :)

Alhamdulillah! all praises to Allah!  I'm so happy to hear of your shahada and that you've joined this beautiful Madina community.  there is sooo much to learn and so little time.  I'm pleased to hear about your son-in-law, it reminds me that whatever good I do, even if it is small, it can have a lasting effect :)

welcome, I wish you all the best for the coming month of Ramadhan.

wasalaam,
Ahmed

Thank you all so much for the warm welcomes! I DID mis-print where my son-in-law is from...it IS U.A.E.....I dont know WHY I cant keep those little letters straight! Earlier this afternoon, I spent a good three hours reading thru many many posts in the different forums here. As I am rather quiet and shy, I will most likely be doing more reading than posting here....untill I have a question. I am just a person who would much rather observe and learn I guess. In peace...Safa

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullah :-)

Welcome, sister Safa! And welcome to Islam!

Dip in! The water is nice and cool here!

I hope you will find deep fulfilment for your first Ramadhan, inshaAllah :)

You're a young mom-in-law, I'd say :)

I'd like to give you a tour... but looks like you've spent 3 hours doing so yourself, already! :) Hope you'll like it here, inshaAllah.

Take care

P.S. I don't post much too... not like those Addicts ;-D...  becareful... you never know, there might be Addiction powder when you innocently log in... and it sets in unexpectantly ;)

Salaams,

Enjoy the family or should I say the board. Hope you read and learn much and contribute much to the board.

Fasting I say is carrying out the commands of Allah. Allah has ordained us to eat and drink, however, in the month of Ramadan one abstains because it is a commandment from Allah, one only eats after sunset. When Allah tells us to eat we will eat, when Allah tells us to stop we stop eating, same goes with spending time with ones partner.
but its also abstaining from anything that might affect our soul negatively, ie, gossiping, slander, stealing, impure thoughts, and everything and anything that will deviate your efforts from being good.
We are required not to perform those acts whether its the month of Ramadan or not.

Ramadan is like you could say a bonus month for the muslims, in that month not only do you fast but all rewards for deeds are increased, so perform all your ibadatas as best as you can.

Its also a time of much joy and happiness, there is no greater happiness than sharing water and some dates with your fellow brothers and sisters, man that rocks.

Anyway more of Ramadan in the folder designated, c u there.

Hanif

Take care.
