Speaking to 8-9th graders!!

slm,

Ok I know I know this has been discussed 32947843095 times before, but I swear I looked and I couldn't find it :)  But I have been asked to speak to a bunch of young bucks at the junior high about Islam and I don't know what to say!  I mean I have ideas, but I'd like some experienced advice.

Let me just throw out some BASIC points I want to hit/mention--in random order :)

*Pre-Islam situation:  This would present Islam as the  ANSWER/solution to problems
--Rights Islam gave to men/women etc

*Ideology of Islam: belief in Allah, etc
--Way of Life: Muslims view life as a continuous "struggle" to be the best person etc

*We believe in Jesus,Noah, Adam, Moses, Abraham etc and they are all incredibly well-respected Prophets and Messengers of Allah.

Ok, those are the first things that popped into my head.  I also anticipate them asknig about the following topics:

--Hijab
--Dating
--Terrorism

So I will try to come up with some answers to those as well.  I want to find some good Quran ayahs about peace and stuff that would go with the topic.

Anyways, I have to do this Thursday insha'Allah.. So PLEASE respond soon and respond often! I want ideas!!! :):)

Take Care,
Wassalam,
Nazia

They may ask you about current world events, and what's going on, so be ready for that just in case.

I think this is a good introductory paragraph (taken from a computer program)
Muslims believe in One, Unique, Incomparable God; in the Angels created by Him; in the prophets through whom His revelations were brought to mankind; in the Day of Judgement and individual accountability for actions; in God's complete authority over human destiny and in life after death. Muslims believe in a chain of prophets starting with Adam and including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Jesus, peace be upon them. But God's final message to man, a reconfirmation of the eternal message and a summing-up of all that has gone before was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through Gabriel.

Perhaps you can talk about the 5 pillars of Islam.

Just you being there as a Muslim woman in proper attire and talking to them will insha'Allah help to remove misconceptions.

I don't know but maybe you could bring some pictures of different mosques, perhaps pictures of Muslims around the world.

Maybe even mention famous ones, such as Muhammad Ali, Hakeem Olajuwon, Cat Stevens, Wolf Blitzer of CNN,  etc.

Maybe bring in some treats (if you are not a good cook, then this isn't a good idea).

The only reason I mention the treats and the pictures, and perhaps even clothing and other trinkets is that it would be something fun for them.

Let us know how it went. :)

salaamualaikum nazia,

i went to a church youth group (6-12 grades) recently with our Masjid president and his family to talk about Islam.  it was pretty fun, too. :)  this was a couple weeks right after the 11th.  here's how we approached the task (our actually how the uncle did):

we had a chalkboard in front of the group.  he began by asking anyone and everyone to tell him what comes to mind when they hear the word "Islam."  we got the usual replies, "middle east", "osama bin laden", "pretty head things" (referring to hijab) :), and "the jewels they wear on their foreheads" (hehe) to name just a few.  he filled up the board with their replies.  some were intelligent answers, some not so intelligent.  but it was interesting to hear what all they had to say.

so then, the uncle started off by giving a basic background info session on islam and its basic beliefs.  as he talked, he tried to cover all the words mentioned and written on the board.  and anything he didnt cover in the talk, he later talked about separately.  it was really informing and the kids enjoyed it cuz they could interact with us.  he cleared up alot of misconceptions they had and even shed some new light about Islam to them.  i think for the most part, they left there with a clearer and more open attitude towards Islam and Muslims.

at the end, we opened it up for Q&As.  this is where we all spoke, his family and I.  they really enjoyed it.  i think if i were to speak to a group of younger kids or youth, this is how'd i'd approach it.  they not only get to interact with the topic, they understand it better.  as said before by others, be prepared to answer current event topics.  clear up misconceptions portrayed by the media.  and inshaAllah i hope it goes well for you.  make dua before you begin and close with a short dua.

i hope that helps a little.  if you need anything else or any other ideas, lemme know.

alrighty, ta ta!
wasalaamualaikum
