Cameraman barred from taking prize

GAZA CITY
Wednesday 17 October 2001

A Palestinian cameraman, who last year shocked the world with his footage of a Palestinian boy dying in his father's arms after apparently being hit by Israeli bullets, has been prevented from receiving a prize in London by Israeli authorities.

Israeli military officials told Talal Abu Rahma, from the France 2 channel, that he could not go to London to receive the prize from the Roy Peck foundation "for security reasons", the cameraman said.

A few days after the September 30 incident, Israel's army chief of staff, Shaul Mofaz, admitted that Israeli troops had probably shot Rami al-Durra, 12, as he huddled with his father against a wall.

The death provoked outrage around the world.

The Palestinian uprising, which began two days before that shooting, is aimed at Israel's military occupation and the creeping Jewish settlement of land seized in the 1967 Middle East war.
